subject: What To Expect While Recovering From Liposuction Treatment [print this page]

Liposuction is a highly effective, minimally invasive procedure that allows patients to eliminate localized pockets of fat from their bodies. It can also be used in a wide range of body contouring procedures, from thigh lift and breast reduction to neck lift and brachioplasty. Recent advances in cosmetic surgery technology have led to radical improvements to the liposuction procedure. As a result, healing times have been reduced, and the final results are generally more natural looking than ever.

Most patients who undergo liposuction will be able to return to work and other activities involving minimal exertion within a week of surgery. During this time, the treatment sites will still be swollen; however, normal movements such as walking will not be impeded. Plastic surgeons request that patients wear compression garments in the days immediately following liposuction.

Some minor pain may be experienced during the recovery period; however, this pain can be controlled with medication. Stiffness and aching can be alleviated by simply moving around. Patients who undergo liposuction using the tumescent technique (in which a solution is injected into the treatment area prior to the insertion of the cannula) will experience draining during the recovery period. This is normal.

While recovery from liposuction requires approximately two weeks, the aesthetic side effects of the procedure, such as swelling and bruising, will take longer to fade. As swelling subsides, the skin will conform to the patient's newly refined contours, and the patient's improved physique will begin to reveal itself. After approximately six months, the full results of liposuction should be apparent. By this time, all feeling should have returned to the treatment areas, and the incisions should have healed. Some minor, inconspicuous scarring may remain; however, the overall results of liposuction should be extremely natural looking, with the treatment area being smooth and the patient's overall figure being trimmer and slimmer.
