subject: Iron Man 2 Expected To Be Big At The Box Office [print this page] Iron Man was an unexpected hit at the box office as well with critics in 2008. Sure, the movie was expected to do well, as it is a film based on the Marvel Comics superhero, and Marvel films generally do well at the box office. However, Iron Man is a more obscure character, and at the time was certainly not on a household name like Spider-Man or the Incredible Hulk. The movie was a major blockbuster, and the minute it was a hit, a sequel was greenlit. Iron Man 2 sees the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, billionaire playboy turned superhero after a brush with death causes him to reevaluate his life.
A quick warning to those who have not seen the first film, there are spoilers ahead.
After announcing to the entire world at the end of the first film that he is Iron Man, Tony Stark is experiencing superhero and media burnout. With Congress on his back, wanting him to turn over his high powered armor (which they no doubt plan to use themselves), he must also deal with a secret government agency called S.H.I.E.L.D. that want to use him in their operations. Throw in a genius level prison inmate with an old grudge who develops his own armor, a business competitor that wants to decimate Stark's fame and fortune, and romantic tension with his personal assistant, and you have a recipe for an epic summer blockbuster.
The film reunites the majority of the star studded cast from the first one. Robert Downey Jr., Gwenyth Paltrow, Samuel L. Jackson, and even director Jon Favreu return. However, one person that will not be returning is actor Terrence Stamp, who played the character of Rhodey in the first film. Stamp is instead going to be replaced with actor Don Cheadle. In the sequel, Rhodey will receive his own suit of armor and become comic book fan favorite War Machine. Also appearing in the film is Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, Tony Stark's business rival, Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, and Scarlett Johanson as the Black Widow.
The film is expected to make major bank at the box office, just as the first film did. It is also expected to be really well reviewed, and fan reaction to the new trailers has been staggeringly positive. The band AC/DC is even releasing a compilation album just for the film's release, and with no other major superhero films opening this summer, Iron Man 2 will most likely reign as box office king.
