subject: Can Changing My Diet Prevent Neck Pain? [print this page]

As so often happens, client feedback and seemingly "far out" questions from my clients about their health conditions lead me perform research which then leads to valuable and sometimes surprising knowledge.

One recent question posed by a client is whether or not diet is a factor in either causing or preventing neck pain. At first blush, I imagine a man eating a Big Mac and then five minutes later, he's being put in a C-Collar due to his neck pain. Of course, this is an exaggerated thought but one may pose the question - how could food cause or prevent neck injury?

The neck is made of seven bones also known as vertebrae. Each vertebra is divided by disks which functions as shock absorber. Vertebrae depend on interconnected muscles, nerves and tendons for its efficient function on neck.

Injury, stress and age (due to wear and tear of activity over the years) are generally the culprits when discussing the causes of neck pain. It's also true that there is no miracle drug or food that can provide relief to neck pain.

What a good diet can do, however, is provide nutrients which will help maintain and even increase skeletal, muscle and nerve health.

Neck pain can also be reduced by consuming adequate fiber and antioxidants. Inflammatory chemicals can be reduced by consuming foods that has huge amount of omega - 3 fatty acids. These foods will reduce the neck pain.

We should be aware of the fact that the additional consumption of these will lead to more trouble as it is insoluble in water. Vitamin D and Calcium helps in strengthening the bones and assist in avoiding neck pain. Many of our foods provide vitamin D and Calcium.

It is found abundant in fruits, nuts, vegetables, soybeans, whole grains and legumes. Magnesium is necessary for the tightening and loosening of neck muscles.

Drinking enough water is also important in maintaining neck health. When we are dehydrated, electrolytes become imbalanced. This can impair both nerves and muscles.

Just as there are foods which can help prevent neck pain, there are also foods which can help cause neck pain. Eating a diet high in saturated fats and meat can cause inflammation. Additionally, alcohol can deplete the body of magnesium. Smoking should be avoided as it deteriorates the bones.

My Neck pain program is also very much recommended. This program is all natural and will help you a lot to relieve your neck pain.
