How Yoga Helps Prepare You for Birth

Prenatal Yoga is the best way for you to prepare for your miraculous event. The slow rhythmic movements calm the mind as you move with each breath. This focus on breathing allows you a deep connection of mind and body. This connection is key to the labor and delivery process. It allows you to have focus and clarity of mind in an otherwise stressful situation.

The breathing techniques that are used while practicing Yoga not only give you the mind/body connection that you will need, but they also give you tools to get you past the labor pains. The kegel exercises that come so highly recommended teach you what muscles you will use during the delivery when it comes time to push.

The two different aspects are so easy to do that I can walk you through both at the same time. As a matter of fact, in Yoga the poses and exercises move with the breath. This helps to establish a mind/body connection that allows you to focus on a specific area of the body.

In this case, you want to focus on what is known as the pelvic floor. These are the muscles that keep you from going to the restroom. Okay, I know what you are thinking. "Ew" doesn't seem to cover it for some, but it honestly does help.

I have a little exercise to outline for you to try out. Once you have found the muscles that stop you from going to the restroom, you are ready for the next step, kegels. Seat yourself some place comfortable with as little pressure on the pelvic area as possible (if that is still achievable at this stage of your pregnancy).

Take a few deep breaths. On your next inhale, you need to tighten up your pelvic floor muscles by varying degrees. Imagine yourself taking those muscles up a flight of stairs. On the exhale, you release the muscles by small increments, or taking the muscles down the stairs.

The slow, deep breaths combined with the directed focus will prepare your mind for the concentration required for labor and delivery. And the purpose of the kegel exercises? To identify the muscles used when you push. When you release the muscles, those are the muscles and the sensation you will need to identify with to prepare yourself for the big push.

The experiences of millions of women who have practiced yoga during pregnancy have shown that it can help prepare your body for birth. Help your body get ready for the big event by using yoga as a great prenatal exercise.
