subject: Lose Weight By Going High Fiber [print this page]

There are some people who would not think twice about doing something drastic to solve their weight problem. It is quite surprising that not a few are of the mindset that slimming down takes priority above everything else. Whether or not the method compromises one's health is of no importance.

With the great number of overweight and obese people, the demand for products that provide rapid weight loss has increased over the years. The problem of excessive weight gain can be attributed to the lifestyle of these modern times which is characterized to a large extent by inactivity and unhealthy nutrition. Grabbing the opportunity to provide the people with what they want, but not necessarily what they need, weight loss manufacturers have relentlessly churned out product after product that promise quick and easy weight loss.

There are several options available to dieters. Aside from weight loss pills, there are shakes and diet snacks, various diet plans, exercise gadgets and equipment, patches and even weight loss surgery. From among these choices, experts agree that the best way to lose weight is through the combination of a high fiber diet and an active lifestyle.

Fiber refers to the indigestible parts of a plant. There are two types soluble and insoluble and both assist in the weight loss process. Fiber helps in the maintenance of good digestive health by allowing food to pass through the digestive tract smoothly thereby encouraging regularity of elimination. It also expands in the stomach creating a feeling of satiety and eliminating food cravings. At the same time, fiber also has unique properties that help lower blood cholesterol. In addition to all these, fiber rich foods are rich sources of nutrients.

Writer Audrey Eyton writes about calorie excretion which is another function of fiber. According to Eyton, fiber helps in maximizing weight loss by its ability to flush out calories from the system thereby preventing the conversion of excess calories into stored fat.

This interesting process was also written about by another health and nutrition expert Brenda Watson. In her writings, Watson refers to the process as the Fiber Flush Effect .

This effect is caused by the consumption of soluble fiber. When it enters the system, this type of fiber becomes a gel-like substance which carries away with it excess calories when it is excreted from the body. Fiber rich food sources include fruits, vegetables, beans, oats and whole wheat.
