Men are the main offenders when it comes to making big mistakes in the dating game - be it online or in the real word.
Sure, the ladies make some boo-boos too, and I will write about them in another article, but for now we shall deal with guys and why so many of them are desperately in need of dating advice.
I have made all of these five blunders (don't worry, there are more, and I'll describe them some other time as well), and learned my lessons quickly each time. Even making one mistake can be the difference between having a successful date or getting a firm slap across the cheek. Okay, I never got slapped, but I have been rejected in terms of setting up a second date. So, what are the top five dating blunders men make on the first date?
1. Poor Appearance. It's totally amazing to me that so many guys make little to no effort when it comes to preparing themselves for a date. On a first date, how you look is the most important factor: whether you are the funniest guy in town with the best personality, and all other things going in your favor - if you look like an unmade bed you can kiss a second date goodbye! First impressions count, so make sure your clothes are clean and ironed, your shoes polished. Just as important is personal hygiene and grooming; if you are a mechanic or blue collar dude who gets a bit grubby during the day, make sure you haven't got filthy fingernails and greasy hair.
2. Getting there late. Your date will be very displeased if you rock up late for your first date. I was once late by only a matter of minutes, and the girl was gone! Make sure your watch or cell phone is set to the right time, and give yourself ample time for traffic jams and other unexpected events. If you cannot help being late, you must call your date to let her know your expected time of arrival. So, be punctual!
3. Making Sex Talk. Guys, this is a big no-no on date number one. You might think it's clever telling dirty jokes and always saying things with double meanings, but this is definitely not going to be welcomed by your new friend. There is an exception - if she starts it first. If this is the case, and she is showing a cheeky side from the get-go, you could be in for a lucky night. However, this is the exception rather than the rule, so tread conservatively.
4. Getting drunk. I understand, you might be nervous. But it makes for bad dating score cards when you decide to calm those butterflies with a couple of beers or whiskeys, my friend. Some guys hit the bottle for some Dutch courage even before they meet their dates, but if she smells alcohol on your breath when you go to give her a friendly peck on the cheek, you could be looking at an early exit from the game. So, lay of the booze, or you lose.
5. Forgetting you wallet. Oh, yeah. This is a shocking mistake to make on your first date. If she is left having to pay the bill at the end of the night after a wonderful evening at a fancy restaurant, you are going to undo all of your magnificent groundwork in one, horrible step. The lesson here is to double check your pockets before you even leave the house to make sure you have enough cash and/or credit cards on you to take care of the bills. Later, you might let her split with you, but on date one, the man should still be the one to pay for the meal, drinks and taxi.
So, there are my Top Five Blunders and advice on how to avoid these disasters ruining your first date. More blunders to follow (and also ladies' mistakes - you don't want to miss those!).
