Why did I get Fat or Overweight? Five Factors to consider

Is your clothes closet full of nice outfits that have become too small to wear? You may ask yourself the question; How did I get fat or overweight? The fat build-up usually takes place gradually over a period of time. If you look for an exact cause, it may be difficult to pin it down to any one thing. In fact, in many cases it is a combination of a number of factors that lead to the build-up of fat over a period of time. A question remains why some stay slim while others get fat and sometimes even in the same family.

After researching a number of causes of fat build-up on the abdomen, hips and thighs, I found at least five factors that can gradually increase abdominal fat. The following five factors are not necessarily in order of importance.

1. Too many carbohydrates; One of the most common causes seems to be eating the wrong foods: foods that are in carbohydrates such as breads, pastas and potatoes, and meat products that are high in fat. Packaged foods are often high in sugar or salt to enhance the flavor and to lengthen the shelve life. These foods are often hard to digest and therefore may lead to fat stores on the abdomen.

2. Eating too much at one time; It is easy to eat too much when the food looks appetizing and tastes delicious, particularly at family picnics or at the huge spreads of all-you-can-eat buffets. To taste the large variety of foods, just take small portions of each. The problem can be compounded by snacking on cake or cookies between meals. The body therefore has more difficulty digesting the food and more carbohydrates will turn to fat causing you to get fat or overweight.

3. Added to these factors is a lack of exercise. This can be a real problem for those in office work or other sedentary jobs. Young people are spending too much time playing with computer games intead of engaging in sports or other active activity. A regular exercise program, sports or other play can help to prevent or reduce fat build-up by burning fat. Tasks like normal housework, walking the dog, taking the stairs instead of the escalator and parking at the far end of the parking lot can also help to burn abdominal fat. Older people who are less mobile should engage in some types of streching or movement kinds of exercises where possible.

4. Some people become overweight because of a variety of health issues, such as chronic fatigue, hormonal problems, depression or diabetes, just to name a few. Health problems with age often means less mobility and exercise. Some people with depression tend to snack more and therefore become heavier. These conditions need the help and advice of health care professionals.

5. Recent studies have observed a correlation between fat people and those who are sleep deprived. It has been found that even while sleeping some fat burning takes place. Some people have a tendency to snack more inorder to stay awake thus adding to the weight problem.

If you dont want to get fat or overweight or if you already have a weight problem, try to find and participate in a program that addresses all of the factors such as diet, exercise and health. Consider also a program that can be tailored to your particular situation or needs.
