High Risk Car Insurance Is Cheaper Than You Might Think

High risk car insurance is available for those who are considered more of a risk for an auto accident than the average driver. But if you are considered high risk you should not resign yourself to thinking you have to pay higher insurance premiums.

There are many insurance companies that will be happy to work with you and offer you a reasonable premium. You will have to spend time shopping around however, but if you want to save money on your car insurance then this is time well spent.

There are many reasons why people are listed as high risk. The number one reason is a conviction for driving under the influence. If you have a conviction for drunk driving and you stay with your current auto insurance provider you can expect to pay at least twice the premium you currently pay. And you can expect to pay this higher premium for at least three years after the date of your conviction.

If you get a second offense you can expect your premium to double once again. One more offense and your insurance will most likely be cancelled. However, if you look for a high risk insurance company once you have a DUI conviction, you might not have to pay twice as much for coverage as you would if you remained with your current insurance company.

Another reason people find themselves in the high risk category is because they get three or four traffic citations within a calendar year. You might be a careful driver but sometimes we all run into bad luck and draw the attention of the traffic cops who are quick to pull us over and issue us a citation.

Just as the person with the DUI on his record, if you have several tickets in one year and your current insurance company wants to raise your premiums, it is time to look for a high risk insurance company.

You might be able to find the same coverage you have now and not have to pay as much as you would with your current insurer that will raise your rate.

If you are listed as a high risk, you will have to pay more for auto insurance than the person with the clean driving record. There is no getting around this reality; but do not think you have to stay with your current insurance company that wants to penalize you for your driving record by doubling or even tripling your auto insurance premium.

Shop around because there are many insurance companies that will be glad to offer you good coverage at reasonable rates.
