10 Easy Rules For Buying Her a Gift
10 Easy Rules For Buying Her a Gift

Ten easy rules for choosing a gift for your wife or sweetheart.

1. Pay attention to her

Sounds like a clich, but it's true. It's the top-of-the-list way of knowing her likes and dislikes. Pay attention to her dressing style, favourite colours, jewellery, preferred restaurants, leisure pursuits, book authors, vacation spots etc.

2. When in doubt, ask.

If you can't tell her preferences, then ask her not the day before her birthday of course. Drop a question or make a casual comment over time. Then make sure to remember her answer!

3. Match the gift to her preferences (not your pocket)

Remember, it's her birthday and it comes round only once a year so be generous. However, it doesn't mean you need to over-spend. Be smart, for example, if the family finances are tight in which case she'll most likely understand. Just keep in mind rule 1.

4. Clothing

If you haven't done your homework (rule 1) this can be a tricky one. Make sure she can wear it. Is it her size and colour and style? Take a peak into her cupboard. If you're not 100% sure, stay away from this one.

5. Jewellery

Generally favourites with women and much appreciated. Again, observe rule 1, else you'll be completely off the mark. Does she like traditional styles or trendy pieces or simple but elegant? Is she into precious stones, metals, beads, or does she prefer silver to gold? Does she wear only stud earrings but show-piece necklaces?

6. Electronics

As a rule, stay away from giving gadgets particularly household ones. Appliances just aren't exciting as birthday gifts. If she's hinted strongly for a particular appliance then save that purchase for another day when it will truly be appreciated.

7. Dinner, theatre or the opera

A nice way to spend time with her, just the two of you. But keep in mind rule 1. Make sure it's a restaurant or cuisine she likes. Theatre, opera and movies must be to her taste. Oh, and ensure you've made prior arrangements for a baby-sitter.

8. Simple acts of kindness

Instead buying more things, do special things for her. For example, do extra things around the house. Make the breakfast that day. Or take the day off to stay home with the kids so that she can have time for herself and/or friends.

9. No free-bees

Yup, believe it or not some guys have tried to sneak in a free-bee. One fellow used to collect hotel giveaways to pass on as gifts. This is absolutely, positively unacceptable; what sort of message are you passing to her? So pull out the wallet and pay for it.

10. Remembering the date

There's no point following rules 1 9 and then forgetting the special day. That's why there's a calendar on your phone, computer, e-mail, desktop, and your PA's desktop. Leave a reminder at the local florist or jewellers they'll definitely prompt you ahead of time. Do whatever it takes to remember the date at least a week ahead of time and everyday in between.
