subject: The Health Benefits Of Yoga [print this page]

In the ancient times, Yoga has been a practice of some people when they need to feel solitude from everything. They seek quiet spots in the forests and not everyone was allowed to practice this art. The yogic postures were passed down by the elders to very few deserving students and have since remained in such practice until in 1918. During this time a school was built in Mumbai known as the Yoga Institute of Santa Cruz, considered as the oldest school that imparts the knowledge of Yoga.

Yoga being the oldest tradition among the citizens of India means "to unite" or a reference to strict discipline. This exercises an individual's moral and mental cultivation which in turns results good health (arogya), longer lifespan (chirayu) and a positive feeling, inner peace and happiness.

There are some misconceptions hanging around the concept of yoga, interpreting it as a form of black magic or sorcery. And others believe that it is only compatible with the minds of the Hindus for it is a mental and physical acrobatism. If truth be told, Yoga is an all-embracing way of life. It is a science of culturing oneself and a practice of mental discipline. It is said to be beneficial to everyone regardless of race, sex, age and religion.

Some people may think that the art of yoga is merely stretching some body parts. Although it is true that stretching is a part of yoga the real movement that needs to be practiced is the creation of balance in the body with the development of strength and flexibility. There are some postures and poses involved which has specific benefits on the physical aspect. There are movements done slowly that can increase stamina while doing the opposite pace can induce heat within the body.

Not one student from yoga has exclaimed boredom during their practice of its movements. If yoga would be anything it is but boring. It has a variety of movements and poses that are developed from time to time. One liberating thing about yoga is letting go of insecurities and pride of thinking you can be better than the rest of the class or contrary. Most yoga students have developed a noncompetitive spirit and enjoy the activities as it comes.

Aside from the practice of various poses, yoga also includes breathing and meditation. Most typical yoga classes executed at gym facilities are more concentrated on the physical benefits of yoga. But there are the more traditional ones that involves the spiritual aspect as well by having an inspirational reading from the teacher leaving the students venturing into their spiritual side as well.

In general, yoga has its wonderful impact both on the physical aspect as well as the spiritual. Choosing any of the yoga class will still be beneficial on the health in the long run.
