subject: Caring For Your Engagement And Wedding Rings [print this page]

Engagement and wedding rings are often the most important pieces of jewelry a person can own. They are symbols of love and promises. They are also worn more often than any other jewelry and can take a lot of abuse. Here are some tips to make your engagement and wedding rings last forever.

First, remember that your engagement and/or wedding ring is an expensive piece of jewelry. While it is certainly important to wear it often, even daily, it isn't necessary to wear it continuously. Wearing your ring in the shower or while performing housework not only causes wear and tear on it, which can loosen the prongs and result in the loss of the diamond or other precious stone, but you run the risk of losing the entire ring. Remove the ring when you wash your hands to avoid having it slip off your finger and down a drain. If you like to lotion your hands, remove your ring first to avoid lotion building up and dulling its beauty.

Second, clean your ring often. Jewelry cleaning solutions can be bought just about anywhere, and if you prefer home remedies, many recipes consisting of ammonia, water, and dish soap are available online. Cleaning your ring regularly will allow you to spot any scratches or marks on your ring, and will prevent heavy buildup, which may require a professional cleaning by a jeweler. When you clean your ring, inspect the prongs and make sure they are tight. If you notice that the prongs on your ring are loose, stop wearing it and take it to a jeweler immediately before the precious stone falls out.

If your fingers swell and it is difficult to remove your ring, use a lubricant such as Vaseline, soap, or oil to help slide it off, but be sure to clean your ring immediately to prevent any damage or dulling buildup. If your ring is consistently tight, take it to a jeweler to have it fitted properly. There's no need to suffer discomfort, or to banish your ring to a jewelry box forever.

Finally, designate a safe place for you to put your ring each time you remove it. Avoid drains and tight spots that would make it difficult to retrieve it, should it fall. By putting it in the same place, it will be much easier to find it the hext time you want to wear it.
