subject: How To Clean The Hood Of Your Cooker [print this page]

A great looking hood for your cooker can make or break the design of your kitchen. Nowadays there is a lot of choice for the design of your cooker hood so you don't have to go with a run of the mill model. You can choose your cooker hood based on the design of your kitchen or the colour of your other appliances. Before you buy, ask yourself whether you've gone for contemporary or classic design in the rest of your kitchen, and are your appliances black, white or silver?

However, the hood of your cooker does more than just look pretty. These appliances are made to extract dirty air, smoke and smells from your kitchen, and are a great help especially if you have a super-sensitive fire alarm which reacts to the smoke produced when grilling or frying food. While you should never neglect the importance of having working fire alarms, it can be extremely frustrating when they are set off at the drop of a hat.

To keep your cooker hood and the extractor fan working properly make sure you pay regular attention to your appliance. If you think about the amount of grease pumped into the air when you are cooking and bear in mind this grease has to pass through the extractor filter, you'll understand how dirty the hood of your cooker can become.

Cleaning your cooker hood

Clean the grease filter once a month - a dirty filter is not efficient and it will have to be run at a higher setting to achieve the desired effect. This will cost you more in energy bills.

Before cleaning make sure your extractor fan is switched off. If any light bulbs need replacing refer to your manufacturers handbook for guidance on which bulbs and how to change them.

If yours is a recirculation filter it will need the charcoal filter replacing once or twice a year. Once every month wipe the exterior of the hood with a clean cloth and some hot soapy water. Don't use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads especially on stainless steel as this will scratch your cooker hood.

Chimney cooker hoods are the most popular in kitchens and they will match either a modern or a classic design. The Baumatic F70.2SS chimney cooker hood is just one example. It is available in stainless steel or silver and can be vented, or used as a recirculation filter.
