subject: Paul Blart Mall Cop Now Playing On Directv Pay Per View My Review [print this page] So I have to admit that most of my curiosity about seeing Paul Blart: Mall Cop stems from the fact that it was shot entirely in my home state of Massachusetts (though it's set in New Jersey - go figure). I'm a fan of Kevin James and always thought he was hilarious on the now defunct CBS series The King of Queens. With James in the lead and Adam Sandler's production company Happy Madison Productions behind it, I thought maybe I would be pleasantly surprised. I can say now that Blart pretty much cruised along the lines of what I expected - a tame, juvenile exercise in comedy with nothing new to offer. Not entirely terrible or at all offensive, but also completely forgettable.
In the 2009 flick, Paul Blart is a sad-sack of a mall security guard who believes his low-rent job is of much more importance than it actually is. His mom and daughter urge him to start internet dating, but Blart seems perfectly content with devoting all his time to his mundane job. That is until he meets Amy (played by Glee's Jayma Mays), who runs the new wig kiosk at the mall. He is instantly smitten, but before he can make his move, the mall is overrun with a band of criminals, who take Amy and a group of others hostage. The criminals of course have an elaborate, mastermind plan to somehow use credit card codes to steal $30 million, fly to Cayman Islands, and to take the hostages with them. It's up to Blart to save the day. The scenarios and twists in the movie are illogical and unrealistic, but the movie doesn't really pretend to be anything other than what it is - fluff.
Though I'll admit it was cool to see some familiar locations (the Burlington Mall and South Shore Plaza specifically - I actually saw one of the sets at the mall during filming), the movie was a mild exercise in comedy. It was harmless, and the kiddies may enjoy it, but otherwise I say save your money and put your cash towards a movie ticket for The Hangover instead.
