Why You May Need To Use A Prong Collar For Your Dog

Your dog might need a prong collar if they have attitude problems or when they are going to a training class. Pain is what most people think of when they see a prong collar they are scary looking. As long as you know how to use the collar your dog will be ok.

A prong collar is not used to hurt a dog only to train or walk an unruly dog. They are really kept as an aid for teaching or training a dog. Always take the collar off of your dog when not training or walking them. If the collar was to get stuck on something it could cause serious harm to your dog.

There are dog trainers that will tell you to always use the prong collar when walking your dog, others will tell you to never use it after training is over. The choice is up to you, if you have a large dog and you feel that training didn't work and he still pulls too much, you may want to use it. If not you might want to try a harness. The easy walk harness is great for stopping a dog that likes to pull. Pulling not only hurts the dog, but your back and arms will feel the pain too.

Trainers also think differently about how the prong collar should go on and where it should be placed on the dog. If the collar is put on wrong and it is too tight, it will harm your dog, if it is too loose it will have no effect. The collar being placed on the wrong part of your dogs neck can lead to a serious injury. Follow what your trainer does, but if you feel they are hurting your dog you might want to switch trainers.

Some dog trainers think that just because they are working with a large breed dog, they have to use a prong collar, other trainers do not agree. You need to find a trainer that will work with your dog and get to know them. Just because your dog is big and looks threatening doesn't mean that they are. Some dogs like that are intelligent enough to be taught without that collar, in fact it might make them fearful of any collar you try to use after that. Do not let a trainer make you use a prong collar.

Remember, just because a prong collar works well to train some dogs, it does not mean that it will be good for your dog.
