Tropical islands are well known getaway popular activities like fishing, shelling and sunbathing. But many tourists don't realize that there is a lot more to indulge in apart from spending a perfect day on the beach from dawn to dusk. A tropical island is than just a beach and if you are looking for something else to do, you can always find something.

Most tropical islands offer a variety of invigorating activities for different people and skill levels. You can delight your taste buds and try the authentic cuisine of that particular island. Trying out some local cuisine is a great way to experience the local culture. Food is an important part of a culture and a good way to learn about it is to take a cooking class. Try taking a cooking class as an alternative to going to the beach. You'll learn a great skill too.

Shopping is another activity you can do. Shopping at any of the tropical island destinations broadening right from a high end department store to a group of women selling their wares on the street or an overtly aggressive vendor can be an intriguing and memorable experience. You can purchase unique clothes and gifts from the island which make excellent gifts. Most major attractions on the island that you are touring will be dotted with at least one on-site gift shop or a variety of vendor stalls selling souvenirs from t-shirts and handicraft items to postcards and other standard merchandize. Top of the line, finer and more valuable items including diamond solitaires, Swiss watches, crystal, perfumes, coffee and spices can be purchased from sophisticated and state of the art shopping centers.

In addition to the typical island activities, tropical island destinations also offer several unique attractions for visitors who are enticed and intrigued in to delving deeper into the history and culture of that specific place. Most islands will have cultural history museums and historic building that you can tour. These places will give you an insight into the local life and history of the island. Just because you are on vacation doesn't mean you have to check your brain at the door. You can continue to learn many things. Moreover, take a tour of the island's interior. The natural landscape of an island doesn't stop at the beach but extends far inward. Go far a hike through the jungle. Relax in some waterfalls. Climb a mountain. Bike around the island communities. There are many things you can do on an island that are active but don't involve swimming at the beach.

Most tropical island destinations beckon tourists to come and enjoy their world class spa resorts and hotels. Book yourself a tantalizing spa appointment in the serenity of your resort. Treat yourself to some pampering and take a day or two to just relax and forget about the problems of your life. After all, you can't spend every day in the sun and this will help reduce the chance of getting a sun burn while making you feel great.

Tropical islands are beach destinations. People go there to relax in the sun, get a tan, and play in the ocean. But don't assume those are the only things you can do on an island. Islands offer much more than a beach and even if you aren't a beach person, consider a visit to one of the tropical islands in the world to explore some of the other things the island has to offer.
