Model Railways - Toys Or Collectibles?

Let's face it, we all loved model train sets as children. It was awesome to observe that model train going round the track. Nothing changes! Model Railways aren't just popular toys, they are also a very collectible item. Collectors love realistic locomotives, rolling stock and accessories. So how do you know if you are getting a toy or a collectible? Let's discuss a few ways you can tell. I'll also compare some model train sets intended for children versus those made as art.

Model train sets have been around almost as long as real railroads. They were one of the first major toys and the demand for toy trains has grown in recent years. The designs are obviously more realistic, and children love them. You want a toy train to be reasonably priced, but tough enough to take the odd accident. You can get great sets from companies like Bachmann, Pacific Rails, Hornby and Lionel. These companies' products range in price depending on what you want, but are still fairly reasonable.

Collectors of model railways and train sets are fanatical. There are even groups that have been formed in honor of the hobby. There are many different types of collection that range from small scale layouts to larger scale garden train sets. Large amounts are often spent on building up huge collections. It's not everyone's idea of money well spent, but if it's your passion then why not? A collector looks for craftsmanship or curiosity when assessing a model train purchase. Uniqueness is a much sought after quality. Price is often less important than the quality of a piece.

The ideal model train can be a collectible as well as a toy. This is true of the Lionel model railways and trains. The Lionel organization has been around since 1900. Some of their older sets go for high prices. There are groups of collectors dedicated only to Lionel. Lionel is still around making great trains that hobbyists and children can enjoy. The quality of their products mean that they are great toys and will grow to be the desire of many collectors.

Whether you are a child playing, someone with a great hobby or a collector, the appeal is very much the same. They are a timeless toy with a collectible appeal.
