subject: Buying The Best Patio Umbrellas [print this page]

patio umbrellas come in just about any size, shape and color. They vary in quality and the different styles are meant to serve different needs.

The most common ones are the simple styles that actually fit through a hole in the middle of a patio table. These can easily be opened and closed, like a regular rain umbrella. The weight of the umbrella should equal the weight of the table it is anchored too. For instance, if you have a light weight plastic table you need a lighter weight umbrella otherwise a heavy wind could cause the umbrella to topple over the table.

You must choose the right base as carefully as you choose the right umbrella. A heavy base that holds a fairly light umbrella can cause some serious damage to the umbrella in the event of a bad storm or even a quick strong wind. Your goal is to either have the umbrella suffer no damage, or worst case, to have it tip over rather than break in half.

Plastic is common, but has a limited use. These are frequently used when families want to have multiple umbrellas for a special outdoor function. You can fill them up ad hoc, and empty them out again. Sand and water are usually what's used to anchor them in place, and into which the umbrellas can be placed. They are easy to fill and easy to empty, however, if you are searching for a base for a more permanent use, these probably won't work well, especially in climates that experience heavy winds and severe weather on a regular basis.

The best base to use for an umbrella that will be on display permanently is either concrete or cast iron, or some other type of heavy steel that won't move easily. However, when choosing this type of base, you need to have an umbrella stem made of a material of similar quality and strength. If not, you can expect your umbrella to break in two during a severe storm or even a high wind.

An umbrella base should be fairly wide in order to be able to maintain its grip on the ground. The wider the base, the better chance you have of not needing to pick up your umbrella each time the wind blows. These bases are best found at high end garden centers. Frequently if you bring in a photo of your umbrella, one of the sales people will be able to show you the exact base you need.

For heavier bases, it's better to buy them locally. Considering they can easily weigh over 25 pounds, shipping costs can get pretty steep. Ask nurseries and garden centers if they can deliver.
