Buoyed by the tremendous support it has received from the traveling people for its recently introduced Volvo buses in the city, the state-owned KSRTC has gone overboard to introduce nine non-AC semi-low-floor buses in the city at the earliest opportunity. The buses bought under the urban transportation project funded by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission JNNURM will be introduced to ply on the Chottanikkara- Aluva, Poothotta-Njarakkal and Panangad-Aluva routes. All the buses will be through Menaka.A KSRTC official said that once the Motor Vehicle Department cleared the permit to operate the buses, the corporation would be able to roll them out within a period of two days. KSRTC had applied for the permit to run buses in the proposed routes on April 27. We are waiting for the department to give sanction. Once it is obtained, the buses will be brought to the city from Thiruvanathapuram, the official added.Already 13 low-floor AC Volvo buses are plying on various routes through the city roads. With the introduction of these new buses, the total number of JNNURM buses in Kochi would go up to 22. The total number of buses including AC low-floor, non-ac semi-lowfloor and mini buses that will be introduced under the project is 200.The buses will have 1,100- mm wide door for easy entry and exit, comfortable grab bars and air suspension. The drivers selected to run these buses were given training at the Ashok Leylands centre at Namakkal in Tamil Nadu recently.
