Temporary Car Insurance In The Uk - Is It Even Necessary?

As all UK motorists already know, it is the illegal to drive any type of vehicle without having the proper type of insurance in place. Many people have in the past been convicted for driving without insurance, even though they were only driving a new car home from the place where they purchased it.

Even though this may seem unfair, the law is the law, and whether you drive a car every day of the year, or whether you only drive it on one occasion, you are still required to be insured.

This is a perfect example of when temporary car insurance comes in handy. Another example would be if for some reason you end up borrowing a car from one of your friends or relatives, even if only for a few days. Remember, no matter how experienced you are, and regardless of how carefully you drive, you can still be involved in an accident, and if you are, and you don't have insurance, the authorities are going to come down on you like a ton of bricks.

Another benefit of temporary cover is that it not only protects you against costs arising from damages caused to the vehicle you are driving, and damage caused to the vehicle of a third party, but it also provides a welcome safety net regarding the safety of you, your passengers, and anyone else who may have been injured in the accident. Even though you may only the borrowing your friend's car for a day, that doesn't mean to say that you won't be involved in an accident, and considering just how affordable temporary cover is, why would anyone want to take the chance of driving illegally.

Another instance where temporary car insurance comes in handy is if you decide to hire a small van in order to move your belongings to a new place of residence. Here again, having temporary cover means that if anything goes wrong, such as being involved in an accident, at least you'll have peace of mind in knowing that you're insured.

Of course, this can be a real blessing should any of your belongings get severely damaged because of the accident. In fact, even if the van got stolen, together with your belongings, having temporary cover means that you would at least receive compensation, which in turn means you'll be able to replace that which was lost.

Perhaps your eldest son or daughter would like to borrow your car in order to go away on holiday for a few days. If this is the only time they ever drive your car then it would be pointless to include their name on your existing policy. Instead, you could contact your insurance provider and purchase temporary cover for your son or daughter. At least then, if they end up crashing your car, the insurance company will pay for it to be repaired or replaced.

Generally speaking, temporary car insurance is available for periods ranging from 1 to 28 days, and it allows a licensed driver to drive any vehicle. One thing to bear in mind however is that temporary car insurance is for the most part only available to drivers who are over the age of 21.
