subject: How To Get Over The Gag Reflex Isn't All That Difficult To Learn [print this page] How to get over the gag reflex can be a useful thing to learn, especially when one is tired of visiting the dentist and undergoing a great deal of stress because of an easily-stimulated gag reflex, for one. There are also a couple of other more personal reasons for why people desire to greatly reduce or even entirely eliminate the gag reflex, and they certainly are deserving of consideration.
One of the most important things for people to understand about this reflex is that it is indeed just what it says; a human and involuntary reflex. That's why you'll need to take some time and test out where in your mouth the gag reflex begins. Think of the tongue and its tip and then begin working backwards from there until the reflex point has been reached, first of all.
We all need the gag reflex, by the way. It is the body's way of preventing objects from entering the throat outside of normal swallowing. However, work can be done to retrain the gag reflex so that it is not quite so readily apparent whenever a dental tool or some other object is put into the mouth. Some people can barely stand to have a spoon in their mouth, so getting control of the reflex can be important.
The key to gaining control over that reflex is to think about brushing the teeth. This doesn't mean that clean teeth will limit the gag reflex but it does mean that working the tongue thoroughly through the act of brushing can work to reduce gagging. Simply put, begin brushing the tongue where the gag reflex begins. Brush that area for about 10 seconds and deal with the gagging that will result.
Eventually, when done properly, the body will begin retraining itself and will put the gag reflex spot further back and further back still as more time passes and more brushing and gagging is accomplished further back in the throat. And that is a key; each time the body retrained itself go further back until the gag begins again and brush for another 10 seconds.
Remember, this is a somewhat lengthy process and could take up to a month to almost completely eliminate the reflex but it is sure to be worth the time and effort put into retraining the body so that the reflex is not as readily apparent. Understanding how to get over the gag reflex, then, can be useful for a number of applications, most especially when visiting the dentist.
