subject: Hanging Gardens: A Haven Of Calm And Beauty [print this page]

Mumbais Hanging Gardens derives its name from its situation on the western slope of the Malabar Hills. Located opposite the famous Kamala Nehru Park, it overlooks the azure waters of the Arabian Sea. The park was originally named Ferozeshah Mehta Gardens after a renowned barrister in former times. Easily accessible by bus, train or taxi from the city, the location of the garden provides it with a panoramic view of the region. It is also famed for its breathtaking vista of the sun set across the Arabian Sea rendering it an ideal place to spend a serene evening enjoying natures beauty.

Initiated in 1880, the park was subsequently renovated in 1921. The park was constructed over three reservoirs containing 30 million gallons of water which are stored and purified before distribution in the city. It is believed that the building of the Hanging Gardens was conceived in order to prevent the water supply which is used for drinking and other purposes being contaminated by the activities of the neighboring Towers of Silence.

The beautifully landscaped, terraced garden features interesting hedges of bushes pruned into animal shapes which are carefully tended. Another of its popular attractions is an intricate flower clock situated at the centre of the park. The most striking quality of the Hanging Gardens is the sense of tranquility that pervades its atmosphere rendering it an ideal haven of peace and calm in the busy commercial city.

Mumbai is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist and business destinations in India. The many attractions of this vibrant city as well as its commercial district can be easily accessed by lodging at one of the finest Mumbai hotels. The centrally located The Leela Kempinski Mumabai, one of the most convenient and hospitable luxury hotels Mumbai will undoubtedly add a special and unique element to a stay in the city.
