subject: Low Carb Diets - Get The Facts [print this page]

Carbohydrates are the body's primary source of energy. The body absorbs energy in the form of glucose. A low carb diet is a diet which consists of cutting out carbohydrates in an effort to get the body to use fat primarily for energy. There are many low carb diets lurking around in our world. Some of them include: the Atkins diet, Carbohydrate Addicts diet, the Zone diet, the Summersizing diet, and many others. They are designed to increase protein intake and decrease carbohydrate intake. Thus shifting the cycle in which the body absorbs energy from burning carbs to burning fat.

There may be some benefits to going on a low carb diet. Some of these benefits include:

*Improved mood

*No more emotional eating

*Better dental hygiene

*Increased energy

*Decrease in cravings for sweets

*Muscle and joint pain gone

However, there are also some disadvantages of going on a low carb diet:

*Constipation

*Low energy concentration

*Difficulty of sustaining restrictive diet

*Quick weight loss but then the weight is regained

*Reduction of dietary fiber and foods that protect against heart disease

*Limiting common carbohydrate foods such as bread, cereal, and pasta

So are low carb diets really good or bad? In my personal opinion, they can do more harm than good. Low carb diets restrict the body's primary energy source through manipulation. When the body doesn't get the energy that it needs, it will not perform correctly. Low carbs diets are NOT the best diets for weight loss and are DEFINITELY NOT the best diets for improving overall health. So if you want long term weight loss and long term good health, then a low carb diet may not be the best choice for you. However, do your research before you try to go on the diet.
