subject: Retain Beautiful Skin! 3 Common Misconceptions! [print this page]

There are so many skin care products on the market today and it is very confusing when you're trying to figure out which one to use. There is controversy everywhere on what products are best and the truth is, that the most expensive and well packaged products aren't always the best item for your skin. Most of the cosmetics sold today do the exact opposite and are actually harmful to your precious skin. Here are some common misconceptions when it comes to purchasing your skin care products.

#1: Collagen

Collagen, a very well know product that is commonly added to costly "high-end" beauty creams. Collagen is a naturally produced substance in our skin, helping to provide strength and tissue elasticity. Aging occurs as your skins ability to produce more collagen decreases. This is what leads to wrinkles. So... Common sense would say by supplementing this collagen loss it would help to regain our skin's youthful appearance, right? Wrong. Skin care products that contain collagen can potentially expose your body to the harmful dangers of "prions". These are the carriers of the dreaded "Mad-Cow Disease" just in case you've never heard, this is a condition that causes ongoing progressive brain degeneration and sometimes worse, "Bird Flu" which can cause death.

Misconception #2: The Sun

"Sunscreen protects our skin from harmful damage" Well, this may shock you but... Many sunscreens actually do very little to protect our skin. In one study, the average UVA protection provided by a wide range of sunscreen brands was only 23%. However, the worst part, is the average protection of the "un-known brands" that don't make the claims are higher at 37%! What about all I've heard about how the Sunlight causes cancer? Well, believe it or not just the opposite might be true. Scientists have conducted studies with lifeguards in the sunniest parts of Australia. They are in the sun all day, and amazingly have the lowest rate of skin cancer in the world.

So Who has the highest rate?

It's the individuals in Corporate America that are deprived of sunlight. Statistics say that US cancer rates are highest in the northern states with the least sunshine and lowest in sun-drenched states of Utah and Hawaii. Researchers all over the world believe, as sun exposure increases, malignant skin cancer risk goes down. Amazing! Misconception #3:

"Consmetic Surgery Can Fix All of My Problems..."

Studies have found that 1 in 5 patients who underwent a cosmetic skincare procedure considered their results to be very disappointing and a very surprising 8 in 10 patients said they were strongly against it, and doubt they would EVER go through such a horrible experience again.
