subject: Can Long Sleeve Shirts Help Control Skin Cancer? [print this page]

In modern times the media is full of dire warnings about the effects of global warming on our health and the environment. We are constantly hearing warnings about lack of food, more deserts, a shortage of food, melting glaciers and other threats. How do long sleeve shirts figure in any of this though?

A huge increase in skin cancer cases has occurred within the last century. So many people you speak to have been personally affected or have come into contact with somebody affected by skin cancer. Excessive exposure to the sun dramatically increases ones skin cancer risk, according to many experts.

If you spend a lot of time in the outdoors or have a fair complexion (you are more at risk if your skin is fair) or both you need to be extra careful not to allow a lot of ultraviolet light to reach your skin. This is one of the simplest and most effective ways to limit your skin cancer risk.

If you work outdoors or even spend a lot of time there for recreational or other reasons, perhaps you should follow the example of our ancestors. In times past styles of dress were very different from our own. It was common to cover much more of the body even if participating in activities or work that took place in the sun.

Wearing a hat and long sleeve shirt outside needn't make you hot and bothered though. The many new materials and manufacturing processes available to us make a lot of types of clothing including long sleeve shirts more lightweight and cooler than ever before.

We must do everything we can to reduces the chances of suffering from this terrible condition that reduces ones quality of life and even leads to death for so many people. Using anything that minimises the amount of ultraviolet light reaching your skin is a sensible idea. Long sleeve shirts may not be a magic cure for skin cancer but proper use can go a long way to reducing your risk.
