subject: Kerry Katona's Dramatic Weight Loss…again [print this page] Love her or loathe her, it is virtually impossible to avoid her. Kerry Katona is constantly in the headlines; usually it has to be said for all the wrong reasons. Struggles with alcohol and drugs and turbulent marriages have made Katona a household name.
This week however, she was in the papers for something positive- her dramatic weight loss.
Like many celebrities Katona's size has fluctuated greatly. In 2008 she lost six stone in a matter of months. This fast weight loss was short lived- most of the weight was put back on a gain the following year. Now, once again, she is looking is looking svelte, having, reportedly, followed a strict weight loss plan.
The papers have reported that a combination of healthy diet and exercise have resulted in the latest dramatic weight loss, though it has also been reported that, in the past, liposuction and fat camps have also featured in Katona's weight loss programmes.
She is not the only celebrity to struggle with her weight. Oprah Winfrey and Kirstie Allie have both swung between extremes of size though the phenomenon is not restricted to women- Matthew Perry and Charlie Sheen have both fluctuated greatly in years gone by.
Regardless of how she did it and what weight loss plan she followed, however, looking at the pictures published in various news papers this week, it is impossible to argue that Katona does not look healthy, slim and fit.
Many might feel that celebrities have an easier time losing weight than the rest of us. Arguably if we all had access to personal chefs, personal trainer and the latest weight loss treatments then losing the excess pounds would probably be easier.
Surgical interventions such as liposuction and the fitting of gastric bands are expensive. And whilst the fitting of a gastric band is available on the NHS to morbidly obese patients, liposuction is a cosmetic treatment and therefore, has to be paid for by the individual.
Although celebrities might have easier access to weight loss programmes, it does not necessarily follow that they will be any more successful than anyone else.
Prescription weight loss pills are a relatively inexpensive but successful treatment. Many men and women have had excellent results with these medications. If combined with a healthy, calorie controlled diet and exercise then these weight loss pills can have very dramatic weight loss results for the patient.
Whilst drastic and fast weight loss like Katona's is something to which we may aspire it is not necessarily realistic. Any weight loss plan has to be achievable. To aim for fast weight loss and not to achieve it can be demoralising and cause a person to put weight back on. Setting achievable goals for weight loss is vital in order to succeed.
So whilst dramatic weight loss like Oprah's or Kerry's might be dismissed as only achievable by rich celebrities this is not the case. Weight loss programmes are readily available, as are doctor prescribed medications (now available on line from Healthcare council approved sites.) Weight loss is something we can all achieve. If Kerry Katona can do it then perhaps anyone can
