subject: Alkaline Balance Diet: What In The World Is It? [print this page]

All around the world, people are becoming more and more concerned with their health and fitness. The evidence is all around; you rarely have to look very far: there are more and more gyms opening every day. In parks and suburban streets, you can see people jogging to improve their health. And on the internet, on health forums, websites, ads and even your email inbox, you'll find many different kinds of diets. Each one claiming to be the best, most healthy diet you have ever tried, each one claiming to be the solution to your very problems.

One such diet you may have heard about is called the Alkaline Balance Diet. Also known as the Alkaline Acid Diet, Acid Alkaline Diet, or even, in one website I found recently, the Alkaline Diet Detox.

So, what is it?

Without getting too technical and turning you off, an Alkaline Diet is a diet that generally avoids foods that are acidic, and emphasizes foods that are more alkaline in nature. Basically, that means the diet promotes eating fresh citrus fruit and vegetables, roots, tubers, nuts and legumes. It also has you cut down or avoid foods like sugar, caffeine, meat, and even grains, dairy and fungi.

What is it supposed to do?

Depending on the specific form of the diet, its practitioners claim that the diet can cure symptoms such as lack of energy, skin problems, digestion problems, and even prevent cancer. Some even claim to prevent the occurrence of cysts, cure recurring headaches, and as well as lead to healthier teeth and gums. Most variations claim that following the diet will lead to weight loss.

That sounds good! Does it work?

This is a little tricky. I'll have to go with, "yes".

Conventional medicine encourages the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables. Chances are, you've heard the same from your mom. Doctors and health specialists have also generally recommend cutting down on meat, caffeine, and sugar. Doctors have been recommending these as part of a healthy diet for years. So, yes, the diet can improve energy, and yes, the diet can lead to weight loss.
