This 1km stretch of clean, white sand even has its own prime time television show and was the venue for Beach Volleyball at the 2000 Olympic Games.
The beach has more to offer than waves and lifeguards.
There are markets held in Bondi every Sunday and the Bondi Pavilion Community Centre has a theatre and exhibition gallery and an outdoor amphitheatre. There are also food outlets and plenty of shopping opportunities.
Bondi Beach features many popular cafes, restaurants and hotels, some with spectacular views of the beach and surrounding headlands.
Backpackers and Singles.
During my travels I meet many backpackers and all want to visit Bondi, not only for its vibrant year round entertainment and nightlife, but also to meet fellow singles.
Opportunities exist not only on the beach, but at the hotels, restaurants and at the numerous backpacker hostels close to the beach.
Suggested Day Tour.
Start at Circular Key and take a bus from bus stop E to Bondi Beach. The bus terminal is at the eastern end of Circular Quay railway station.
It is worth spending at least 2 hours at Bondi, walking along the beach and promenade, swimming and enjoying the views from the headlands on both the north and south sides of the beach.
The views from the north headland are particularly impressive. The cliff edge provides a panorama of the Pacific Ocean and the full length of the beach.
Continue on to Watson's Bay.
Take bus number 380 from the main street to its terminus at Watson's Bay. This inner harbour beach provides you with spectacular views of the city and the harbour bridge.
It should be time for lunch and I suggest a visit to Doyle's Fish Restaurant on the waterfront. You can either eat in the restaurant or buy a box of fish and chips to eat on the grass banks.
To walk off your lunch, wander up the path leading to The Gap. This spot has steep cliffs dropping down to the Pacific Ocean. If you have time follow the path to the South Heads for more spectacular views.
Ferry back to the city.
Walk back to Watson's Bay and take the ferry back to Circular Quay. The 20 minute ferry ride provides amazing views of the harbour, Opera House, bridge and city skyline.
The cost?.
Amazingly cheap. Buy a Sydney Pass at Circular Quay before you leave and you can use it on buses, trains and ferries.It is available for 24 hours and costs $17.
If you are planning to be in Sydney for a while, this is a cheap way to see the city. The 3, 5 and 7 day passes are the most economical.
