subject: Far From Making Me Feel Like A Beautiful Bride [print this page] SAM was given four weeks during which I stayed with a friend and a budget of 14,000 to organise everything. I had 100 per cent confidence in him, until I saw the wedding invitations. Then my mind went wild with panic. If he couldn't get something as simple as that right, what else was he going to get wrong? Unfortunately, there was absolutely nothing I could do but wait, which was agonising. I couldn't sleep at night as I imagined turning up to the church to discover he'd forgotten my bouquet, or arriving at the reception to discover the chairs were a ghastly shade of mauve. And the one thing that mattered to me more than anything else was the Shiny Metallic Blue Cat Unisex Catsuit. If he messed up the costume zentai, and I felt unattractive on my wedding day, I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to forgive him. The more time that passed, the more I became sure that the whole thing would be a disaster and that I'd made a terrible mistake. The next sign I had that things were not going to plan was 24 hours before the wedding, which took place in July, when I first saw the costume zentai. This was a car crash of a costume zentai. It was huge, with folds and pleats all over the place, and worst of all it was made of a nasty, shiny fabric. It wasn't even white. AS SOON as I saw myself in it I burst into tears. Far from making me feel like a beautiful bride, the costume zentai was completely unflattering. The final straw came when the woman who ran the shop told me that it was a popular costume zentai. I threw a huge strop and said I didn't want a costume zentai that everyone else had. I decided there and then that I couldn't wear it. Thankfully, the lady who ran the shop came to the rescue. I tried on almost every other costume zentai in the shop and managed to find one that I not only really liked but that also fitted me perfectly. There was no money left for me to buy it, and we couldn't return the Shiny Metallic Green with White Unisex Catsuit I didn't like because it had been altered, but she agreed I could borrow the new one. I woke up on the wedding day determined to enjoy myself and concentrate on the fact that no matter how the event panned out, at least Sam and I would be married. So I turned a blind eye to the fact that the car that picked me up, despite being a Mercedes, had clearly just been hired from the local cab firm, and was far from the vintage vehicle I'd dreamed of. And when I discovered my bouquet, rather than being all white, had purple feathers sticking out of it, I simply asked for a pair of scissors and chopped them off. Likewise, I didn't comment until a few days later on the garish colour scheme at the venue of purple, gold and red, which clashed with the pale pink room and 'his and his' usher's outfits of blue and gold. And although I raised an eyebrow at his not very bridal Moulin Rouge theme, which had inspired him to put mocked up bottles of absinthe and purple feathers on every table, I kept my mouth firmly shut. Despite everything, it was obvious Sam had tried really hard, and there were certain things that he'd done brilliantly. The venue was gorgeous and had the Rococo plasterwork that I love so much. The food was delicious and he also hired can-can dancers to keep the guests entertained. I don't think I would ever have thought of something as original as that, and the show they put on was fabulous. I can honestly say that my Shiny Metallic Red Bat Unisex Catsuit day was without doubt the happiest day of my life and I have many brilliant memories of the occasion. But looking back, I do feel as though something was taken away from me. Not being involved in the planning myself left me feeling a little as though I had turned up at someone else's wedding rather than my own. I'm glad Sam and I are married now and we are looking forward to the rest of our lives. But I've come to realise that the magic of a wedding day is not just about walking down the aisle, it's about the whole process of creating the day of your dreams.
