subject: Top Ten Gifts For A Man By A Man [print this page] OK, so you need to buy a gift for a man and have no clue what to get him. He's not your boyfriend so sexy lingerie is out of the question (unless of course the man in question likes dressing up on a Friday night if you know what I mean *winks).
As a man myself I've compiled my top ten list of "go to"gifts for men that never fail. I can almost guarantee that any guy reading this will have received and be counting on receiving many of the items on this list. Sometimes ladies think these gifts are too generic and not very thoughtful, but to be honest I have grown to expect many of these gifts so I don't have to buy them myself. If I don't receive them at Christmas or when my birthday comes along it's so annoying... damn my laziness!
I'll quit my jibber-jabber and get straight to the man stuff!
10. Drink
A nice fine wine (or his favourite drink) will never go amiss. This gift will definitely get some use and is bound to bring out some laughs and general frivolity - lightening the mood and hiding the fact it's all you got him! Drinks rank low on my last due to the short term nature of this gift.
9. Ties/Cufflinks
Provided the man works in an office and actually owns a suit (most men do) this gift is a staple and reminds me of a phrase I get told all the time; "you can never have too many ties". This is true for the most part. I have only ever purchased a handful of ties in my life, despite having a tie rack filled with an assortment of serious, comedic and colourful ties. You never know when you'll need a Mickey Mouse tie... yeah maybe not. If you pick something nice it will get use, the guys probably had the same selections of ties to choose from for months (since the last gift giving day)... your gift will provide much needed diversity.
8. Random Gadget.
If men like anything, it's a good gadget to fiddle and play with. We're all young at heart and a funky little gadget provides much needed amusement. It doesn't even matter what the gadget it, if it's out of the ordinary or a little weird then perfect - something to joke about with the mates. Just remember, the crazier the better!
7. Pen
When I say get him a pen, I don't mean hit the local supermarket and buy a pack of biros. I have been given a few good pens in my time and I definitely enjoyed the gift. The whole "my pens better than your pen" compensating for something else methinks? Anyhoo, men naturally compare other mens pens don't they? No, just me? Right... think I'll move on. The point is a quality pen will get use, we might lose it really quickly, but we'll use it and get a little ego boost and ideas above our station. Definitely a good choice.
6. Electronics
If your budget can stretch, electronics are an awesome gift choice. Especially "in" things like the new iPad or an iphone. These gifts hit the same psychological sweet spot as the gadgets, but magnified ten fold. Receiving a new iPad will definitely gain you some brownie points and is a "tweetable/facebookable" event... so you get to be news and other guys wishing they knew you. See how I just invented words, that's how you know I'm badass *coughs. This gift would be ranked higher if not for the budget factor.
5. DVDs/Games/itunes giftcard
These are good "go to" gifts because there's a huge selection, they're easy to find and they last forever (plus you might be able to borrow this gift). This is age dependant or "inner age" dependant I should say. Find out if the guy has an Xbox360, PS3, ipod etc before making your choice - this is easy to do and you can scope out what he already has ensuring your gifts inevitable use. There are plenty of sites out there rating the newest games and listing the newest movies. This git is a sure fired winner.
4. Comfy Clothing
This is a wide open range of gifts, including things like sock, underwear, slippers and funny/querky t-shirts. I can confess that I have not bought my own pair of socks or underwear for years! This gift is a must as many men depend on it...do you want to be responsible for Armageddon? Men wandering aimlessly around without socks. Men wearing the same boxer shorts for days on end, finally resorting to wearing plastic bags because we cannot operate the washing machine on a regular schedule? I don't think so -please show some mercy.
3. Designer Aftershave/Cologne
If you know what he likes, get it. Simple and guaranteed use, this gift is a "classic". Just go into his room/bathroom and check the bottle he uses. The men I know don't change their aftershave often/ at all. We usually have one we like and stick with it - making this gift a "no brainer" and sure winner.
2. Wallet
I love receiving a new wallet, it's the only time I actually clean out my wallet of old receipts etc. In particular, a good leather wallet never fails. When choosing a wallet you have to think about the man that uses it, is he classy, suit wearing and sophisticated: a premier leather wallet will aid his clean image. Does he consider himself cool: a funky/bold wallet would hit the spot. My favourite gift in ages is a wallet that I received recently... made of Industrial Strength Duct tape! This thing is badass and would survive world war 3 (on the front lines with a shiny arrow pointing at it saying "Hit me if you can mother******"). In short a wallet is an awesome gift that says something about the carrier, so let the man see you care, get him an amazing wallet!
And the winner is...
1. Designer Watch
This just beat out wallets because it's always on show. Granted this will cost you more than a wallet so think long and hard. Men love their watches and women love men with a nice watch (as I'm sure you know). I myself prefer the thick leather strapped watches as a sign of manliness, but own a selection of watches for different occasions. A nice watch completes an outfit and says a lot about the wearer, projecting their personality to the world..pressure on you much? I recognise that there's always the risk they won't like the one you picked, and it's a lot to spend on such a risk... but what the hell, a top watch will be appreciated by all.
