subject: Florida Dentistry & Caffeine Addiction [print this page]

Everyone is fond of caffeine, especially when it is in the form of coffee, chocolate, colas etc. In places like Florida, people are quite inclined towards caffeine products as caffeine contains components that have a calming effect on body. Caffeine is basically a drug that works as a short-term reliever and gives an energy boost to the mind and body. Although, it is highly recommended that you should keep a check on your caffeine consumption. Regular high quantities of this drug may prove to be fatal and cause problems like bone loss, lack of sleep, feelings of stress and heart problems.

Effect of caffeine on teeth

1.Majority of cola drinks contain phosphoric acids which function as corrosive agents and result in the washing off the tooth enamel which, in turn, exposes the tooth to harmful bacteria and cavities. Excess consumption of coffee and chocolates also result in thinning of enamel and dentine exposure.

2.Apart from being a stress reliever, caffeine is just a sweetening agent with no nutrient value. Sodas and syrups which are high in fructose content also make teeth susceptible to the attack of bacteria and thus cause tooth problems which may require a visit or two to a dentist.

3.Caffeine products also leave brown or dark colored marks on teeth. These stained teeth can be cleaned by the dentist through teeth whitening procedure. Porcelain veneers are also a good option to get rid of these stained marks.

Products like coffee, colas and chocolates contain no useful nutrients and their excess consumption may result in lots of oral problems. It is recommended to go for a regular dental check up once every 6 months, especially if you are addicted to any of the caffeine products. This would help your teeth to stay healthy and allow your doctor to oversee any dental decay caused by caffeine.
