The Right Parenting Is No Parenting At Youth Sports Events

Whether you are a parent of an athlete participating in hockey clubs

, softball clubs or one of the many other local youth sports organizations offered throughout our community it is important to follow a few rules when cheering your young athletes on at any youth sporting event.

Always Stay Positive

Too many times parents are heard in the stands criticizing the play of their children. This is detrimental not only to the athletes but also to the other fans in the stands. No one should have to endure critical comments being thrown out at an event that is supposed to be fun for athletes and spectators alike.

As current events have indicated negative comments at a sporting event can boil over into physical altercations between parents which is something that no child should have to witness.

Avoid Coaching your Child During the Game

Coaches are hired to coach your children during their sporting event. Trying to pull your child aside during a game to give him instruction conflicts with the work of our coaches and can give your child the wrong message during a time when they need to be as focused on the task at hand as possible.

Keep the Comments About the Referees to Yourself

Regardless of how bad you think the referees are avoid singling them out by making disparaging comments during or after a sporting event. Keep in mind that by questioning a referees calls you are not only make a scene but you are sending a message to your child that it is acceptable for them to do the same. In too many instances when fans get on the case of a referee the children playing the game become so focused on the calls they do not get that they stop focusing on the game itself. This leads to poor athletic performance and a childs continued negative perception of referees who are doing the best they can to ensure kids have fun and remain safe.

Keep Humble no Matter how Well Your Child Performs

If your child performs well in a sporting event be sure to remain humble in front of them and their teammates. This will show your child that no matter how well they perform they should remember that they could not have done so without the support of their teammates and coaches.

Parents play a critical role in their childrens participation in youth athletics. By exhibiting respectful behavior at all times you are emphasizing to your child the true values which should be gained from athletic participation.
