Hiring a DC Criminal Lawyer

Author: Rough Venils

A criminal court case is brought against individuals who have been deemed to have committed an act which is classified as criminal under government, federal and local government law. A DC criminal lawyer would be hired by these individuals to represent them during the case with the aim of disproving any evidence or to bring about a lighter sentence.

In any criminal case it is the prosecutor and not the victim of the crime who will bring about the case. In some instances a case may not be brought due to lack of evidence against the supposed perpetrator, despite the wishes of the victim or victims concerned. Evidence in any case can be presented to the prosecutor by those for the prosecution and those for the defense, i.e. a DC criminal lawyer.

A criminal case is brought when an act is committed against a person or persons, and which is defined under government, state and federal legislation. This legislation will vary from state to state so it is important to hire a criminal lawyer within the state in which the crime was committed. Any criminal lawyer hired will need to be familiar with the various laws, legislation and statutes which govern that area, they must also be up to date on any new legislation or changes to applicable laws.

During a criminal court case there are various procedures which must be followed for the case to be successful. This will include the participation of various parties including judges, prosecutors, witnesses, lawyers and enforcement officers. Strict procedures must also be adhered to when a crime is being investigated, when an arrest is made and when evidence is gathered.

Anyone who is found guilty of a criminal act can be handed down punishment ranging from fines and community service orders, to incarceration in a state facility. It is the job of the DC criminal lawyer to disprove the evidence against their client and have the case dismissed or have their client exonerated of all charges, or to present a case in which a more lenient punishment or sentence is passed.

When hiring a criminal lawyer it is important to find someone who has experience with your type of case. Most lawyers will work out of private practices and in most instances the client will meet with them in their office. Occasionally the lawyer may meet with their client at home, at work or in a state facility. Personal recommendations are a good way of finding a lawyer to take on your case.

Once you have found a lawyer to take on your case you will need to meet with them to discuss your case. They will outline your options to you and may make certain recommendations which could result in a more lenient punishment. This could include entering into a plea bargain, where the accused would plead guilty in return for a lighter sentence.About the Author:
