Used children's books are one of the easiest types of items to acquire when you're building your used books inventory
. Every family has had children, and said children have books that they have outgrown. And these children's books have very little use for adults, unlike text books, which age well in terms of usefulness. On the other hand, and rather ironically, it can be very difficult to sell said kiddie books compared to other used books. At the base level, if you want to
sell used children's books, you sell it the same way you would sell a brand new item.
First, clean your books. This is probably the most important thing you should keep in mind if you have
used children's books for sale. Presentation or how it looks is important for both the adult who will buy the books and for the kid who will end up reading it. For the adult, they are very protective of their kids, and would not want to give them anything that looks dirty and unsanitary. So a book that has dust, unsightly stains and paper lice will be a huge turn off.
Additionally, adults are also aware of the following: Children LOVE pretty things. Aesthetics are very important for kids. In terms of books, how it looks like physically is significantly more important than the actual content of the books. Cheap used children's books that look ugly and unkempt will be ignored by the children or worse, hated - which means you stand to lose their guardian as a customer.
When it comes to cleaning your used children's books, you don't really have to go so far as to spend on restoration, which is impractical because you'd end up spending more than you would if you just bought a new copy - you can simply remove all the accumulated dust with a soft brush (the ones used on computer keyboards are perfect) and compressed air, or you can just blow on it. Spend some time straightening creases and folds, gluing spines, and fixing torn pages. Remember that your goal is to make it presentable, which means there are times when you just have to leave bits and pieces on the edges torn, because a page with a torn edge looks neater than one with scotch tape on it. There's nothing you can do with pages that have oxidized, so you just leave them be.
The next important part after ensuring that your
used children's books are presentable, is presenting them effectively to the people who will buy them: the adults. These are customers who have an idea as to what the kids want, yet still retain practical sensibilities. When listing your items, make sure you are very descriptive about what they should expect - provide a short synopsis on what the story is about, how the children will like it, and don't forget to provide information about the condition of the books. Provide pictures in your listings if possible.
Last but not the least, always remember that children's books are not as important as academic books and have no lasting practical use to people. So price your items accordingly.
