Choosing a Coat to Suit your Body Shape by:Charlotte Bleasdale

Whilst we all like to keep up with the trends as much as possible and experimenting

with new styles is a lot of fun, buying a coat is not the time to slavishly follow fashion. A quality coat should be an investment piece that will last you all through the colder months and hopefully the following year as well so you need to choose a style that will really suit you.

Although not everybody fits neatly into one body shape, most people's figures have some sort of defining characteristics. Bearing these in mind will help you find a flattering shape for you. These are some of the most popular coat shapes and our recommendations for who they will suit.

Pea coat

A pea coat is characterised by buttons or toggles right up to the neck and usually has a small, neat collar, often with rounded edges. A traditional pea coat is made of a thick, woollen material, or a fabric with a similar feel. This style of coat is perfect for petite women and those with a slim or boyish frame. Avoid this style if you have a large bust, as the high neckline will be very unflattering.

Belted trench

If you're looking for a timeless style you can't go far wrong with a trench coat. Trench coats usually come with a belt and flare out below the waist, making them perfect for those with hourglass figures as they can really show off their curves. If you're a pear shape look for a full-skirted style to hide those thighs and large lapels to balance out your bottom half. If you're an apple shape stick to single breasted rather than double-breasted styles and wear without the belt, otherwise you will emphasise the fullest part of your figure.

Mackintosh

Whilst some Macs are very similar to trench coats, if you are an apple shape the perfect coat for you is a long straight single breasted Mac. Look for one in a light material that will skim your shape without adding bulk and don't be afraid to wear it open; the vertical line it cerates will draw the eye downwards for a streamlining effect. Avoid this style of coat if you're petite as it may drown you and if you're an hourglass you should avoid anything that isn't fitted at the waist.

Parka

A classic hooded parka comes in a khaki colour but these days they are available in all shades. Whatever the colour, a parka is characterised by its large hood with fluffy trim. They're a very cosy style of coat and ideal for the colder winder months. With its soft, unstructured shape, this style of coat is perfect for softening inverted triangle or cone body shapes that have broad shoulders and slim hips. Lightweight parkas are also perfect for apple shapes as the hood detail draws the eye away from your middle section.

Leather jacket

All body shapes can look great in a leather jacket - it's just a matter of finding the right one for you. Hourglass figures need one that is fitted at the waist - try a crop biker style with a diagonal zip or a neat blazer shape that is tailored to your curves. Apple shapes look great in longline styles while pear shapes suit something with large lapels or detailing towards the top; this season's aviator jacket with shearling trims is ideal.
