Can A Parenting Class Really Make A Difference?

Without training, we rely on methods that were used by our parents

, the beliefs that we have concerning parenting and instinct. That does not mean these methods are wrong. Education enhances the instincts, the beliefs and the natural parenting skills that have been developed.

How do parenting classes help us to become better parents? One of the first steps to becoming a good parent is realizing there is no such thing as the perfect parent. Parenting is a learning experience. The most important things motivate us to want to learn and what could be more important than our children. Look around at all the information available today that is focused on helping parents handle different situations. The information is there because of the number of people that seek solutions when they are faced with a problem they do not know how to handle. However, there is only one thing wrong with relying on all this information. Not every parent or every child is the same. A one-size-fits-all method will not work.

Parenting classes provide customized training featuring parenting techniques that are effective for children of all age groups. In order to provide training that can be used for all children, the fundamental techniques must be a focus. Once they are taught, specialized training can become a concentration. Taking a parenting class that provides the fundamental techniques teaches parents that communication is essential. In addition, respect is a necessity. This includes the parents and the children. Respect must be reciprocal. An age-old saying, 'In order to get respect, you have to give it' is a good example of this technique.

The next fundamental skill that is taught is distinguishing between discipline and punishment. Many people believe they are the same, but whether you are parenting children or parenting teenagers, showing them that discipline is a conscious control and punishment is a way of enforcing obedience and that the two are totally different is very important.

The classes will also teach parents the correct way of encouraging children to strive for more. Encouragement does not mean that you are not happy with the things they are doing. It simply means that you know they are capable of doing whatever they set their mind to and that you want the best for them. Often this can be confusing. We have all heard kids say that no matter what they do it is never good enough. This is why encouragement in the right way is so important.
