A Working Wardrobe that Works for You by:Charlotte Bleasdale

When you work in a large office there are always a lot of eyes on what you're wearing

. Yet when you're rushing to get ready in the morning, picking out a show-stopping outfit isn't the easiest thing to do. What you need is a capsule wardrobe of mix-and-match office friendly pieces that mean you can pull together a chic and flattering outfit effortlessly. This is actually easier than it sounds - just follow the advice below.

Choosing a suit

The backbone of your office wardrobe will be your suit or smart skirts and trousers. If you opt for a suit make sure it fits perfectly as you will want to get a lot of wear out of it. Have it tailored slightly if need be; an immaculate fit really does make all the difference. Buy the trousers and the skirt as this will give you much more flexibility and give you more wear out of your suit jacket. Choose a versatile colour such as black or grey (or even one of each) and then you won't have any problems finding tops to match. You can always add more colour with your top. Whether you buy a suit or simply smart trousers and skirts, it's vital to find the shape that's the most flattering on you. Wide leg trousers and A-line skirts are universally flattering. Aim for a skirt that finishes no shorter than just above the knee to maintain a professional appearance.

Mix and match tops

It helps to buy within one colour palette that you like or from a set of complementary colours so that you can mix and match easily.

Layering is a great way to get lots of looks from relatively few pieces. Start with a few vests or camisole tops. These are very inexpensive so you can afford to pick up quite a few in different colours. Black, white and grey will go with everything but bright colours are a great way to liven up otherwise monochrome outfits so get a good selection. Plain ones are perfect but those with a lace trim add a touch of femininity to a masculine suit.

Next look for shirts, blouses or tunics. These can be layered over your vest tops; wear shirts buttoned up or unbuttoned a little to show your vest top for different looks. Light knits are also a great buy. Cardigans, v-necks and deep scoop necks are all very flattering and look great over your camisoles but you can also layer them over your shirt or blouse. Make sure you have a few options in neutral colours such as black, white and grey, then a few bright colours as well.

Little black dress

An LBD doesn't have to be partywear; a smart style is perfect for the office. Don't think that a dress can only be worn one way. A sleeveless sheath dress can be layered over shirts or long sleeve tops. Alternatively, add a suit blazer or later a cardigan over for a softer look. If you choose a long sleeve dress look for one with a deep neckline; then you can wear it over your different coloured vest tops or even wear it without one outside of work for a sexier look.

Professional footwear

It may not be too inspiring but black really is your best bet when it comes to office footwear. If classic court shoes are a little old fashioned try wedges or platforms - these are also more comfortable. Ballerina pumps are a cute modern option with both trousers and skirts but whatever footwear you choose make sure the heel is the right height to wear with your trousers; half-mast is not a good look! Knee boots look lovely with skirts and dresses for autumn winter and if you wear wide leg trousers you can easily wear knee boots underneath.

Accessories

Accessories are a great way to get lots more looks from your existing outfits but you have to think bold! A statement necklace or a chunky bangle in a bright colour will draw the eye and transform a simple black outfit. Tights are another quick win. These days you can choose form a host of bright colours and interesting patterns that will make your simple black skirt and jumper outfit into something really special.
