How To Go Thrift Shopping

How To Go Thrift Shopping

If there is yet another awesome thing that Brooklyn is known for

, it is "thrifting." Thrift shopping is an art. The idea is that you never settle for more more costs that is. You always try to get your money's worth with the lowest prices available.

The first step is to find a thrift store in your local area. It does not matter if you live in the North or South of Brooklyn, the other boroughs, or elsewhere, you can find good thrift stores within reach. Once you have a list of nearby places it is time to start your hunt. Are you trying to find a specific kind of clothing or are you just intending to browse? You may notice that some of these shops will have stuff in a specific theme, while others function more like an outlet for used or rejected items (that are still perfectly good but do not match the rest in their line or were 'misprinted'). That means you may want to read up on some of the locations and then cross off the irrelevant ones to your hunt. So, if you really don't want clothing from the 70s or 80s, avoid the vintage stores.

If you see something that you like then carry it along with you. Since many of these items will be the only of its kind chances are if you don't get it then somebody else will. For that reason, have it on hand and then when you're done picking a few items try them on in the dressing room to make sure they fit and that they weren't mislabeled. If you can't carry any more stuff but you do not want to lose it, you could always hide it somewhere where it might go unnoticed. That way only you know the item's 'secret' location. That could mean switching the rack or leaving it somewhere in the store to return to.

Before you purchase an item make sure you look at it carefully. Is there an obvious reason why it was given up? Is something wrong with the color? Is it ripped, stained, or have holes? You do not want to find out after you got home that it wasn't a good pick after all.

This is just one idea for people trying to find fun things to do in Brooklyn. Check your local news for store discounts and offers.
