Dvd Vs. Blu-ray: Which Player Should You Buy?

Dvd Vs. Blu-ray: Which Player Should You Buy?

Thinking of getting a new movie player, but can't decide whether to buy another DVD player or make the upgrade to a Blu-ray player

? In this short article, we'll take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of each. If you keep just a few things in mind, the decision should be made that much easier.

DVDs and Blu-ray discs look almost exactly the same, the main difference being that a Blu-ray disc can hold many times the amount of data that a DVD can. This is clearly an advantage for Blu-ray, because more data means your audio and video is going to be a lot crisper, cleaner, and clearer. Blu-ray has a maximum video resolution of 1,920 by 1,080, or 1080p, while DVD is limited to just 720 by 480, or 480p. In simpler terms, this means the quality of the video you watch on a DVD can be more than twice as sharp as the picture quality of a DVD. You can see much finer details on Blu-ray movies than you can on DVD. The audio quality is also much higher on Blu-ray, and there is typically support for more modern home audio systems. If you want to watch your movies in a way that puts you directly into the action, Blu-ray is the obvious choice.

The main disadvantage to buying a Blue-ray player, is that Blu-ray is simply more expensive. Several times more expensive, both for the player and the movies themselves. That said, any Blu-ray player will also play DVDs, the opposite of which is not true. If you buy one, you can still keep your DVD collection, and even keep buying more. Many people who have gone the Blu-ray route buy their favourite movies on Blu-ray, and save money by buying other movies on DVD.

The main advantages to buying a DVD player are that they are very cheap at this point, and you can also find plenty of DVDs for low prices. Since Blu-ray is a relatively new format, the number of movies that are available is very limited compared to what DVD has to offer. Again, keep in mind that a Blu-ray players also play DVDs, and you will see that the only real reason to choose a DVD player is the low price point. If you don't watch a lot of movies, or don't care to see them displayed with the newest technology, a DVD player is probably the option for you. You can always buy a Blu-ray player later when they become more popular and the prices drop.Dvd Vs. Blu-ray: Which Player Should You Buy?

Blu-ray discs also have some newer features that DVDs don't have, like screen-in-screen commentary and pop-up menus, but these are little novelties that aren't really selling points for most buyers. If you want to save money and still watch a lot of movies, DVD players are a good option. However, if you care to spend more money on your movie entertainment, Blu-ray offers much better picture and sound quality, and will also let you continue to play your current and growing DVD collection.
