Pet Meds That Are Common For Puppies
Warm, cuddly and cute, when most people adopt or buy their puppy the last thing on their mind is the issue of veterinary care. But pets of all ages have their medical needs and with younger dogs, prevention is the key to your four legged friend leading a long and healthy life. Common medications most puppies need include those for worm, flea and tick control but sometimes unique behavioral issues also crop up that require meds. Here is a look at some of medications you may encounter in caring for your new best friend.
Though most times when you welcome a puppy into your home the dog has been properly weaned from his mother sometimes a very young animal needs some help in getting adequate nutrition. If for some reason the dog has been separated from his mother too early or she cannot provide nourishment a puppy milk replacer is used to make sure he gets the nutrients necessary for development. Gastromate Puppy Milk Replacer Plus IgY (Antibodies) is used for such puppies from birth to 35 days old. This formula contains a balance of vitamins, oils and minerals that is similar to what is found in mothers milk and is intended for supplemental or intermittent feeding. With Gastromate Puppy Milk Replacer you simply mix one tablespoon of the powder with two tablespoons of warm water and administer with a syringe. Smaller breed puppies should be fed every 3-4 hours while larger breeds should be fed every 6 8 hours. The feeding rate for all dogs is 1 ounce of formula per 4 ounces of body weight per day.
Gastromate also makes Canine IgY Plus Gel which is a live direct fed microbial that works well in puppies and dogs with digestive disturbances. Puppies with these issues can be administered 1 cc every 8-12 hours for as long as the symptoms are present.
Another common type of medication for puppies are those that are used to combat fleas and ticks and to control mosquitoes. One popular brand is K9 Advantix II. Advantix II uses a combination of imidacloprid and permethrin to fight parasites synergistically, providing more protection than each of these ingredients alone. Just apply this topical treatment between your puppys shoulder blades in two to six different spots and fleas will stop biting in just 3 to 6 minutes. Advantix II repels and kills fleas in all stages of life. It also repels and kills American dog ticks, brown dog ticks and lone star ticks for up to a month, preventing eggs and larvae from developing. Advantix II also repels mosquitos, biting flies, fire ants and chewing lice.
Similar to Advantix II, Frontline Plus is another widely used flea and tick medication for puppies and dogs of all ages. Though these two products work the same way, the main difference is in their ingredients. While Advantix II uses a combination of imidacloprid and permethrin, Frontline instead combines fipronil with (s)-methoprene to achieve the same results. Frontline Plus for dogs kills prevents fleas and their eggs and larvae from developing. It also kills deer, brown dog and lone star ticks, quickly eliminates infestations with chewing lice and controls sarcoptic mange infestations. Frontline Plus is fast, long-lasting, waterproof and convenient. One topical application lasts up to 4 weeks.
Another common type of medication for puppies and dogs are those that control parasites like heartworms hookworms, roundworms and whipworms. Sentinel Flavor Tabs (milbemycin oxime/lufenuron) for Dogs are monthly pills with the active ingredients Lufenuron + Milbemycin oxime that eliminate heartworm larvae at the tissue stage and hook, round and whipworms at their adult stages. Sentinel also is an insect development inhibitor that interrupts the lifecycle of fleas so that they do not reproduce new generations. It does not, however, kill adult fleas. Starting at 4 weeks of age, puppies can begin taking Sentinel. The flavored tabs should be administered with a meal once a month, preferably on the same day each time from the onset of flea and mosquito season.
Also in the dewormer category of medications are Nemex Tabs. This oral anthelmintic is made of pyrantel pamoate which kills hook and roundworms. Nemex tabs can be used by both dogs and cats and are safe for pregnant, lactating and breeding animals. They are normally given by mouth or mixed in food,
Once you get accustomed to owning a puppy you will soon also become acquainted with the various medications needed to maintain your pets optimal health. While most people will not take in a dog young enough to require a milk replacement formula, meds for fleas and parasites are quite common and usually are used throughout your pets life to prevent infestation and disease. Products like Advantix II, Frontline Plus, Sentinel Tabs and Nemex Tabs are wonderful medications that will help your puppy grow into a happy and healthy adult dog. With a little help from you, your puppy will be your best friend for many years to come.
