Why You Should Still Use Personal Checks

The last time you tried to pay with a personal check a few years ago, you might have been told, "Sorry, we no longer accept checks." Although debit or credit cards are preferred, personal checks are not obsolete. If you have been debating whether to keep using personal checks or not, consider these points.

On a superficial level, personal checks are a way to express yourself. In the instances you interact with others, a check almost functions like a business card. Because there are so many personalities out there, printers of personal checks realize this and offer sets in many colors, themes, and patterns.

On a practical level, personal checks are backup for times your wallet is stolen. Although you do not intend for your wallet or purse to be snatched, it can happen. Instead of fretting about what you will do without your cards, contact your bank to cancel that card and order a new one and, in the meantime, use personal checks for groceries and bills. Although restaurants and retail stores may seldom accept checks now, many supermarket chains still do.

Similarly, identity theft is a growing crime, and giving out your card or checking account number over the phone or on the internet can be risky. How do you know the person on the telephone asking for a donation is legitimate and not a scam artist? How do you know if your computer has been hacked and an online criminal is watching your data for password and personal information? Instead of taking a risk, be prepared to mail in a check to pay a bill or to give a donation.

You may think to yourself, "A money order works in many of these instances. Why should I purchase a set of personal checks?" Although money orders are helpful in some instances, knowing when a bill is paid and the funds withdrawn from your account can give you peace of mind. Otherwise, how else will you know a money order was received?

Although not a primary financial transaction any more, personal checks are not useless or obsolete. Used in a smaller capacity than a decade before, personal checks allow you to express your personality and back you up in certain financial emergencies.
