Why You Need To Keep Your Dog Hydrated

Why You Need To Keep Your Dog Hydrated

If you have a family dog that you take out regularly with family walks and outings then you must remember to take water to keep the dog hydrated

. Many people forget the importance of taking water for the dog as they mainly think about taking food and drink for the children and make sure they have everything else packed for the car journey. Its not something people do out of cruelty by forgetting water for their dog because it does slip peoples minds as they dont truly understand the importance of keeping dogs hydrated.

Its mainly in the summer when you need to keep an eye out for your dog being hydrated as dogs sweat differently to humans. When they get to hot they sweat and pant and when this happens it means they need re-hydrating with small amounts of water to cool them down as well as to be taken out of the heat and, put into a cool place. If youre travelling on a long car journey you can get special pet bowls designed for families who travel with dogs so you can easily pour water out of a bottle into a special bowl for them to have a drink out of.

Other severe signs of dehydration can be loss of appetite, sunken dry eyes, dry mouth tissues, increased heart rate and lethargy. Severe dehydration doesnt happen easily with dogs unless they are ill, puppies, pregnant or senior as this can make them a high risk and in need for much needed fluids quickly. If your dog is dehydrated you need to make sure not to give them an excessive amount of water all at once, give them dry food or use ice packs to cool them down as this can restrict blood circulation.

Water is an essential to life not only with humans but with their pets as well. Each dog depending on their size needs to 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day and if your pet has dry food rather than canned then they will need a bit extra. If you cant tell if your dog is dehydrated due to the usual symptoms then lightly grab a piece of skin from the back of its neck stretch it out and let it go. If your dog is properly hydrated the skin should quickly go back into place, if not the skin will return slowly and then you will know to follow the guidelines above to hydrate them again.
