What You Should Know About Breast Augmentation Surgery

The size of a womans breasts can make an enormous difference in how she feels about herself

. Breast augmentation surgery provides an option for many women who want larger breasts. This surgery requires the placement of implants that are either made of saline or silicone beneath the tissue or muscle of the breast.

There are pros and cons to using the implants that are filled with silicone. While most women prefer the more natural feel they get from silicone, there are also more risks involved with their use. For a period from 1992 to 2006, the silicone implants were banned by the FDA after evidence that they could cause health concerns if they leaked. After considering all of the research, the FDA reconsidered. The saline-filled implants contain sterile salt water that poses no risk to the individual.

It is recommended that a woman be in her late teens or early twenties before considering breast augmentation surgery. This allows for her breasts to complete their development before determining that the surgery is needed. You must be 18 years old to get saline implants and 22 years old to get those made of silicone, but many women dont make the decision to have their breasts enlarged until later in life.

You will meet with a surgeon prior to the breast augmentation surgery in order to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. If so, you may be required to stop taking some medications for a period before the procedure. Depending on the surgeon, it may be performed as outpatient or you may need to spend the night in the hospital.

General anesthesia is used so that you are asleep and will feel no pain. Depending on the implants and the degree of enlargement you are having performed, incisions may be made beneath the breast, under the arm, or surrounding the nipple. The implant will be placed inside a pocket and then stitched close. You can expect to be in surgery between one and two hours.

During the recovery, your breasts will be covered with gauze and drainage tubes may be in place for a few days afterwards. A special bra will allow you to heal. You will need to take a few days off to rest and then avoid lifting anything heavy or having excessive activity of any kind for several weeks.
