What To Expect Once You've Earned Your Online Nursing Degree

What To Expect Once You've Earned Your Online Nursing Degree

When you start working as a nurse, you'll find that no two days are ever alike

. That's a big plus for many nurses -- the variety. And so many people decide to become a nurse, go to nursing school (which may a wholly or partially online nursing program) and receive their Registered Nurse licensure.

And then they find they hate it.

It's happened before. Somehow someone doesn't do his due diligence and ends up in a career he Hates.

Don't let that happen to you. As the demand for nurses increases in the years to come, more people may enter the profession just because it's a "good" job, one that pays well and is virtually recession proof (health care was one of the few job sectors that survived relatively well during the recent Great Recession). Here's a rundown of what you may experience as a working RN:

First of all, expect to work long hours. Ten- to 14-hour shifts aren't unheard of, especially in the beginning of your career. And, as a new nurse, you'll also be expected to work weekends and holidays.

Nursing is demanding physically. Make sure as you research nursing programs and an online nursing school that they mention this to you, or allow you to speak to working nurses -- they'll give you the straight scoop.

If you end up working as a general practice nurse in a hospital, you'll generally be caring for six to seven patients a day. You will give your patients their medications, prepare them for surgery, bathe them, dress and treat any wounds, start IVs, document all procedures, update physicians on your patients' progress, etc.

And you'll do it all again for each and every one of your patients. Every day.

As you consider enrolling in an online nursing school, be sure to know why you want to be a nurse. If you go into nursing because you want to help people, that's fine. If it's because you want a recession-proof career, that's also fine.

But you need to know why you've become a nurse. Because there will be days you hate it. Days where you'll be more tired than you ever believed possible. Days when you see death and illness all around you and you wonder how you'll ever be able to smile again.

Yet knowing that you chose this much-needed and highly regarded profession with your eyes wide open will help you while you pursue an online nursing degree as well when you are working -- hard! -- caring for your patients.
