What Is In Store For The Indian Automobile Market This Year?
The transformation the Indian automobile industry has seen over the last decade or so is remarkable
. Back in the 90s the Indian automobile industry was nothing which interested foreign investment. The only car manufacturers who enjoyed majority market share were the local companies such as, Maruti Suzuki and Tata motors. If you were looking to buy a car, the choice was extremely limited. The small car segment was ruled by the Maruti 800 and if one was looking for a sedan the only options were the Maruti Esteem, Opel Astra and the Daewoo Cielo. However, the scenario in the Indian market today is completely different. The largest of car manufacturers from the world over have launched in India, and most of them have even opened up their production plants in India in order to reduce costs. This shows the potential the Indian automobile industry has and how car giants like Volkswagen, Chevrolet, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai are all competing with one another to gain a fair share of the market.
Even the most luxurious car makers in the world, like Porche, Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover have opened up their showrooms in the major metropolitan cities. This shows what a boom the Indian automobile industry has undergone in the last decade. We have already seen a few cars being launched this year, like the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, the new Toyota Innova and the compact sedan version of the Maruti Dzire. However, this year will see the launch of several new cars across all segments. Lets take a look at some of the cars lined up for release this year. The SUV segment will see the launch of the Renault Duster; this SUV will be one of the cheapest SUVs in the world priced between 7-9 lakhs. Skoda will launch the first station wagon in India, in the form of the Fabia Scout. This will be priced between 6-9 lakhs and should hit the markets sometime post April. A few new sedans to hit the Indian market will be the Chevrolet Sail, face lifted versions of the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra and the Tata Manza CS. The hatchback segment will see the launch of Volkswagens first attempt to a budget car priced between 3.50-5.50 lakhs, the Volkswagen Up should hit the market sometime between October-December 2012. The other hatchbacks set to launch this year are the Fiat Panda, Fiat Bravo and a face lifted version of the Ford Figo. Another new car in India will be the diesel version of the Tata Nano.
These are just some of the many upcoming cars in India which we shall see this year. This influx in the launch of new cars in the market shows the potential of the Indian automobile market and how local car manufacturers as well as international giants are in constant battle with each other to gain a fair share of the market.
