The winner of the tournament gains automatic entry to the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup hosted by Brazil.

Bernstein, however, would not comment on the specific allegation that Ferdinand had been left out purely because John Terry is to stand trial on 9 July charged with racially abusing Ferdinand's younger brother, Anton a charge the Chelsea player denies.

"Let me be absolutely clear, because I'm sure there will be other questions about this," Bernstein said. "We have spent a long while building up to this tournament. We're here to do the best we can, we're here to talk about the tournament, about the 23 players who are here and I'm not prepared to discuss any players who are not here.

"It's an issue I'm happy to talk about when the tournament is over maybe, but we are here to talk about the tournament and about the future and that's it. We all want to maximise our chances of doing well and we believe that the focus is on what's ahead of us not what is behind us."

"I saw it in South Africa [the 2010 World Cup] and the European Championships I've attended with Uefa, when I've often come away with the feeling that I have not enjoyed it. The feelings have been very negative and people haven't seemed to enjoy it.

"It's a great thing to qualify for the European Championship. Only 16 teams are here out of more than 50 who started. You don't get many opportunities in your career to play in a major tournament and we've got to try to make certain we understand that it's not a bad thing to be here."

Wayne Rooney also tried to strike a positive note, insisting that England could still overcome all the problems that have affected them since the turn of the year.

"I'm not going to beat around the bush. Our defence was not good enough," the coach said. "It was an easy game, very easy... I said to them, 'This is not your day the team is dominating out there and yet we're getting ourselves in trouble'. It wasn't the opposition that was causing us problems. We have to have a long hard think about what happened out there.

"The most important thing, whether you're playing up front, in midfield or in defence, is to play simple. We didn't do that in the first half and we found ourselves in trouble. They need to improve, and I'm talking about all four defenders."

While Blanc changed his front six during the second period the back four (Mathieu Debuchy, Adil Rami, Philippe Mexs and Patrice Evra) stayed in place for the 90 minutes. They were dangerously square and Danny Welbeck might exploit a lack of pace in the centre. Mexs looked particularly prone to errors and is under pressure for his place from Laurent Koscielny who came on in the second half to play a midfield holding role.

France were due to fly out to Ukraine on Wednesday before opening their European Championship campaign against England on Monday.

France's run of form since Blanc took over at the start of the qualification campaign for Poland and Ukraine has many tipping them as dark horses for the title.

But the Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribry who has scored in his past three internationals is refusing to look any further than his side's Group D programme, which also includes matches against Sweden and the co-hosts Ukraine.

Then came the meltdown of 2010, when a team of mostly black players at the World Cup in South Africa clashed publicly with its coach even going on strike in solidarity striker Nicolas Anelka, sent home for reportedly calling coach Raymond Domenech names that most fans would have agreed with and failing to win a single game.

That debacle provoked a national crisis, with the government ordering a commission of inquiry. And months later, a new scandal erupted when it emerged that new coach, Laurent Blanc, had spoken in favor of imposing a quota on the number of black and Arab players at Frances youth academy, calling for greater emphasis on players of our culture and history.

If thats how the national team coach expresses himself, it ought to be no wonder that the families of black players from England are fearful about taking their chances with the neo-Nazis of Ukraine.

Spain, the reigning European champions whose leagues are also full of immigrant players, has a national team that is very local, and very white. (The team that won Euro 2008 did feature one player of color, the Brazilian Marcos Senna; the current squad features another, also of Brazilian heritage, Barcelonas Thiago Alcantara.) The extent of the journey facing Spain on the racism issue was laid bare ahead of Euro 2004, when its then-coach, Luis Aragones, was caught on TV telling striker Jose Antonio Reyes that he was better than his French Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry. Except Aragones didnt say Henrys name, he said, that black shit.

A dramatic day for Italian football also saw the arrest of Stefano Mauri, captain of Lazio, and Juventus manager Antonio Conte, fresh from winning Serie A in his first season in Turin, being informed he too is being investigated. The investigations do not surround their current positions.

"The Italian investigation is now the most important investigation into football match-fixing in the world today," said Chris Eaton, Fifa's former head of security. "It is a truly international investigation and will certainly cut off a few heads of this international monster that is feeding off football. I am not surprised [by its scale] I am afraid there is more to come.

"The problem at the international level has existed essentially unchallenged for the last 10 years. The money available is so attractive that the criminals involved and their organisations are taking risks. The threat to the integrity of sport cannot be overstated."
