Walk Rage In Dogs
Dogs can get road rage just like us humans. While it generally doesnt happen when the dog in front of your pet stops too slowly (mutts seem to actually like this for some reason), tempers can occasionally become as hot.
You can tell a person is being victimized by Doggie Road Rage by seeing how often they take their pals for a walk. If the canine rarely is collared and leashed, it could be because the owner hates that their little Benji turns into Zoltan, Hound of Dracula.
They want to growl, bark, snarl at everything. These aggressive traits are mostly all bark and no mark. They end up simply embarrassing their walker. But thats just enough to keep them at home and not rollicking in the wild blue yonder.
These are some of the things that cause batcrap-crazy behavior in dogs:
Theyre frustrated. They are about 2-quarts low on impulse control.
Theyre all wound-up, afraid of being bested or wanting the be the top dog in the situation.
Theyve never been properly socialized, either with other animals or different people
Theyve never been trained to deal with distractions and surprises.
Theyre full of fear, a kind of claustrophobia, feeling that theyve never get off this damned leash.
Theyre allowed to engage in violent play when theyre with other dogs.
Fix It!
The first thing you want to do is socialize your best friend. They may know you, but the more they get to smell and be around others, the better it will be for both of you. This can be done by bringing your mutt in a large enclosed area with other dogs who are well-adapted. Keep your pet on a loose leaf, but let them get acclimated to the other canines. You need to be just an observer, not someone who interacts unless your dog goes Charles Manson. Gradually remove the leash. Let everyone hang for a while.
Another matter to consider is that when youre walking with your buddy you dont keep a tight leash. Get a halter for the pup and use it instead of a collar or a choke chain. Use a non-retractable leash between four-to-six feet long. Take along a pocketful of treats.
Commandeer a bench in a park where dogs parade-by. You want to stay about 20-feet away from the path with your dog. Once your dog sees the other canine, grab a treat. Be generous, so much so that your dog will be distracted until the unknown mutt is out-of-sight. At that point, give em a good dog and hold onto the treats until the next pup passes.
Youll want to repeat this exercise for a half-hour a couple of times a week.
Get ready to see a change in your dogs behavior in a couple of weeks. The response youre trying to get is that when another canine is in the area, your dog will look to you for a treat. Slowly wean them from the bribes, replacing it with lay down or sit.
