Holidays In Madeira Are Perfect Year-round

Consider holidays in Madeira when looking for vacation ideas. Madeira is an archipelago of Portugal, discovered by Portuguese explorers and led by Henry the Navigator also known as Dom Henrique, circa 1419. With no native people inhabiting the land, it was settled by the Portuguese, which included farmers.

Though Portuguese is its official language, those on the island also speak English. Learning important Portuguese phrases before visiting is crucial.

A harbor for vacationers and commercial business alike, Funchal is the capital of Madeira. Visitors by boat will land here. Those that fly in by airplane will land at the airport closest to Funchal.

Because Madeira known for its embroidery and handcrafted items, it is not a full trip if key items are not purchased for the return trip home. If one is so privileged, the world-renowned wine of Madeira can be experienced first-hand.

Madeira Islands were created by volcanic activity millions of years ago. What is left of the volcanoes are caves and tunnels, meant to be explored by those hungry for a bit of history. The sites to see around Madeira are the Levadas, an irrigation system built to ensure water reached drier land. Also learn about the culture with a visit to the Madeira Story Centre, a museum with historical island information, as well as food and souvenir shops. Do not forget to take in the glorious botanical garden and beautiful beaches with crystal clear water.

Travelers there for the New Year have to participate in the grandest fireworks show in the world. If visiting in June, there are celebrations that honor at least three saints, Sao Joao, Santo Antonio, and Sao Pedro. With holidays in Madeira being available year-round, and with it having an historic past, it may not matter what time of the year a holiday occurs. Everyone will find something they enjoy.
