Changes That Took Place in the Health Insurance System Over the Years

The earliest concept of health care started in 1694 by Hugh the Elder Chamberlen This early concept of health insurance coverage in exchange for medical health care services was a very primitive exchange of what we call today the barter system. During those times, payment for medical care was in the form of crops and farm animals instead of the money that we use today.

Disability insurance made a presence in the late Nineteenth Century, which later became a primitive form of accident insurance, although all forms of low cost health insurance were under the umbrella. During the 1850's in Massachusetts, there were a lot of steamboats and railroad accidents which caused injury. So they started offering affordable medical insurance.

It wan't until 1866 when the health industry started to develop. Medical physicians started to form partnerships which becmae stronger and broader as years went by. By the 1890's low cost health insurance was becoming available to individual citizens to help with the burden of unexpected diseases and ground breaking surgery.

Though there were not many rules, laws, and regulations, health insurance coverage for everyday accidents encouraged the quality of life for all individuals to improve greatly because simple medications were beginning to be implemented into this new health insurance system.

the general public wanted more of this. So by 2011 employer-based health insurance was on the front line. The first health insurance policy to be formulated in this manner was the group health insurance because there is power in numbers. The more individuals who were able to buy into the health insurance plan being offered, the lower the average monthly cost for health insurance became.

So the organized fee-for-service health insurance started to provide health insurance to those who can and want to participate. What this meant to the insurance carriers and to the clients is they initially pay out of pocket for medical services as needed.

This allowed health insurance companies to grow and also gave people more access to health care. Unlike today though, most medical health care physicians went to the home of the patient and accepted farm animals and crops in lieu of currency as payment. This practice continued until around 1960 in many areas of the country.
