subject: Getting A Quote For Your Commercial Van Insurance [print this page]

If you drive a van that you also use for business purposes then you need to get yourself a quote for a commercial policy. The insurer will want to know what kind of business you have and whether any of your employees will be driving the van. It is worth checking whether the breakdown cover that the policy is offering also includes European breakdown cover.

To a large extent the kind of commercial policy that you will need for your vehicle will depend on the type of business you are running. When you are able to choose a policy that suits your individual business needs then it is more likely that you will get cheaper deal. If you are using your van every day in the conduct of your business and you need it for collecting or delivering goods to your customers, then you really should have fully comprehensive insurance.

Fully comprehensive commercial van insurance may seem a bit expensive but when you offset your premium payments against what it would cost if someone made a claim against your business, comprehensive policy premiums may not be so expensive after all. When you take out comprehensive policy you should be covered for most instances, including injury and medical expenses (yours and the other driver if you are at fault) as well as loss of or damage to your vehicle.

Some comprehensive policies also include a breakdown policy, but you need to check this out with the insurance company. If you regularly use your van to deliver or collect goods from European countries then you should also have European breakdown cover. It's bad enough breaking down in a place that you are familiar with, but it can be a lot tougher if you break down while you are abroad and don't have cover.

When you need your van in order to run your business then you may want to think about drivers' legal protection policy, which is designed to protect you against the hidden costs such as replacement van hire charges and policy excesses. With drivers' protection policy you know that you have year round cover if you do need a replacement van for a while. With a good policy you will also be covered for your navigation system and in car phone and receive discounts for any extra security devices you may have on your vehicle.

When your van is used for carrying goods you should have a goods in transit and public liability policy. Public liability will cover you if anything happens to a member of the public when you are carrying out your business. If you have other named drivers who deliver and pick up goods then you will also need to have employers' liability policy. Employers' liability policy covers you for any claims that may be made by your employees if they are injured at work and claim compensation from you. It is worth getting several quotations before you decide on the kind of commercial van insurance that is best for you.
