Automotive Ignition Locks

Due to the economic crisis, theft has become the order of the day and vehicles are not spared. A vast number of unemployed people have resulted in car theft due to the fast returns that it offers. Motorists are also at risk because they might lose their cars. It is very fortunate for us that in this day and age, almost everything has been invented. Automotive ignition locks have proven to be one of the most effective ways of preventing car theft. They are made and designed in a manner that they can only allow the correct set of keys to the ignition when it comes to driving the car. The use of a wrong key will result in the steering remaining locked and unmovable until the correct key is put in the ignition.

One of the most recent developments came to suggest that ignition locks are not only meant for car thieves. New innovations of ignition locks that come with additional features have also come into play. Drunken drivers are the main target in this. A new set of these locks have been manufactured and released into the market with breath-alcohol analyzers as an additional feature. If a driver who has had too much to drink decides to take a risk behind the wheel, the ignition interlock will detect alcohol and the driver who is actually the owner of the car wont be able to drive. These kinds of locks were manufactured to prevent the increasing rate of car accidents that are mainly caused by drunk drivers. Drivers might just have to blow into the ignition lock to ascertain that they are not intoxicated.

Recent car locks have been designed to also control the electrical aspect in a car. Without using the correct set of keys, the car will remain dormant. It wont be able to function in the desired way. Anything electrical in the car will be disabled through the use of the ignition lock. The amazing thing about these locks is that they are not irreplaceable. They come in different brands designed for different types of automotives from cheap cars to luxury cars.

A change in the ignition switch will demand for the removal of the trim panels, the tamper proof hardware and the ignition locks assembly. Once all this is done, the switch is then ready for replacement. Despite this sounding very easy to do, it is also tricky especially in new cars which have anti-theft equipment. If the ignition switch is removed for the lock cylinder then its easy for the car to be started with almost any tool that is shaped like a key.
